Henry, Bull Dogs clip Cathedral 70-66 in overtime

    INDIANAPOLIS -- Senior Evan Henry went 8-for-8 from the field en route to 26 points Saturday (Dec. 14), leading the Columbus North boys basketball team to a 70-66 victory over Cathedral in overtime at Southport Fieldhouse.
    Playing in the second of four games in the Forum Credit Union Tip-Off Classic, junior Josh Speidel added 22 points and 10 rebounds as the Bull Dogs improved to 4-0 with their second victory of the weekend. CN knocked off Franklin Central 59-57 on Friday.
    Senior Elliott Welmer chipped in 12 points, and junior Trent Larson netted five points for Columbus North.
    Senior Justin Baker scored a game-high 32 points for Cathedral (1-2), which rallied from a 10-point deficit with two minutes to go in regulation to tie the game at 61 on a free throw by freshman Tra Landers with 19.8 seconds remaining. Senior Matt Gregory contributed 16 points for the Irish.
    Speidel scored seven points and Welmer six as Columbus North jumped to a 21-12 lead after one quarter. Henry and Speidel each scored five points in the second quarter as CN held a 37-29 edge at intermission.
    Henry scored nine points and Speidel seven in the third period as the Bull Dogs pushed their advantage to 54-42 after three. But Baker and Gregory each scored seven points in the fourth quarter as Cathedral fought back to draw even at the fourth-quarter buzzer.
    Speidel and Henry each scored buckets to give CN an edge in the overtime, then Welmer hit two free throws, Henry one and senior Andre Abedian two more to clinch the decision.
    In other games in the four-game event, East Chicago Central defeated Bloomington South 67-51, Brebeuf Jesuit beat Southport 59-48 and Greensburg knocked off North Central 77-72.
    Columbus North returns by visiting Columbus East for a tripleheader on Friday (Dec. 20). JV and freshman games begin at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows the JV at about 7:30 p.m.
