Field set for Subway/Columbus North Invitational in girls basketball
December 5, 2013Columbus North High School
The Columbus North girls basketball team will host seven visiting teams in the second Subway/Columbus North Invitational later this month in the Bill Stearman Athletic Complex.
The Bull Dogs, ranked fifth in the most recent Indiana high school Class 4A ratings, will host visitors from Dayton (Ohio) Chaminade-Julienne, Evansville Mater Dei, Milwaukee (Wis.) Rufus King, Mishawaka, Park Hills (Ky.) Notre Dame Academy, Richmond and Roncalli.
Because this is an event with schools from four states, it has been sanctioned by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
Two of the seven visitors join Columbus North in the Indiana polls -- Roncalli is ranked third in 4A by the ICGSA and Evansville Mater Dei is second in 3A by the ICGSA. Also, Mishawaka was "receiving votes" in previous weeks. Notre Dame Academy was ranked third in Kentucky by MaxPreps.com in its preseason ratings. Chaminade-Julienne has opened its season at 2-2 in Ohio. Rufus King is 0-1 in Wisconsin.
Action in the two-day, three-session event begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27 when Columbus North faces Chaminade-Julienne in Gym 1 and Notre Dame Academy meets Richmond in Gym 2. At 7:45 p.m., Roncalli squares off against Evansville Mater Dei in Gym 1 and Rufus King will play Mishawaka in Gym 2.
The second session begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28 with two consolation games, and championship semifinal games follow at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28.
The placement round starts at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28 with the consolation final. The third-place game is at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28. The championship game is at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28.
Schedule restrictions limit Chaminade-Julienne and Evansville Mater Dei to playing just two games in the event. Both will play first-round games on Friday, Dec. 27 and consolation games on Saturday morning, Dec. 28. Neither will play in the placement round on Saturday evening, Dec. 28.
Of note, Subway Restaurants in the Columbus area have returned as the event's title sponsor. In addition, HoosierHillsHoops.com has returned as the event's media partner. That agreement offers a single online location for fans of all participating teams to find coverage before, during and after the 11-game competition.
Tickets for the event will be available at the door on game days. Prices are $12 for a three-session pass, available on Friday, Dec. 27; $8 for a two-session pass, available Saturday morning, Dec. 28; or $5 for single-session admission, available for each session.
All of the teams in the field come off strong efforts in 2012-13. Here is how each team finished last season:
>> Columbus North (25-1)
>> Chaminade-Julienne of Dayton, Ohio (19-9)
>> Evansville Mater Dei (28-2)
