Jeffersonville ousts Columbus North 30-22 in football sectional
October 26, 2013Columbus North High School
JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. -- Senior Dionte Allen scored three touchdowns Friday night (Oct. 25), leading the Jeffersonville football team to a 30-22 victory over Columbus North in a Class 6A Sectional 8 first-round game.
Allen's second TD, on a 5-yard pass reception from freshman quarterback Camaron Northern, proved to be the go-ahead points as the host Red Devils overcame a four-point deficit with two scores in the game's final 2 minutes, 18 seconds.
Then after Jeff senior defensive lineman Joseph Simmons intercepted CN senior quarterback Michael Vogel and returned the ball 34 yards to the Bull Dogs' 15, Allen produced a 15-yard run to make it 30-22 with 1:16 remaining.
Columbus North had the ball one last time, but four consecutive Vogel passes fell incomplete and Jeffersonville then ran out the clock to improve to 6-4 and earn the right to host next Friday's sectional final against Class 6A No. 3 Center Grove (9-1), a 70-14 winner over New Albany in the other Sectional 8 first-round encounter.
Junior Josh Holt led the attack with 161 yards and one touchdown on 34 carries for Columbus North, which concluded its season at 3-7. Sophomore Mitchell Kelley threw for 51 yards and ran for another 48 yards but suffered an injury on the final play of the first half. Vogel accounted for 87 yards -- 33 rushing, 29 receiving and 25 passing.
Northern, Allen and sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Blanton were leaders for Jeffersonville. Northern completed 12-of-29 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns. Allen contributed four receptions for 35 yards and an early TD run of 1 yard to go along with his closing 15-yarder. Blanton hauled in three passes for 111 yards, including a 55-yard catch and run early in the second quarter that gave the hosts an 18-0 lead at Blair Field.
Things didn't go well early for Columbus North, but the Bull Dogs battled back to take a four-point lead before Jeffersonville seized ultimate control on its final possessions.
Allen, a 6-4, 280-pound tight end/back/linebacker, gave the Red Devils a 6-0 lead on their first possession when he blasted from the 1 while playing Wildcat quarterback.
When CN lost a fumble on the first play of its ensuing possession, Jeffersonville struck quickly for a 12-0 advantage -- Northern hitting senior wideout Isaiah Reaves deep over the middle for a 48-yard score on its first play after the takeaway.
Two possessions later, the Bull Dogs' Kelley appeared to sneak into the end zone from about 6 inches out. However, the officials ruled that the ball never crossed the plane of the goal line.
A pass interference call on Columbus North when Jeff faced a third-and-10 from inside its own 1 gave the home team a spark. Another pass interference call on the same drive gave the Red Devils breathing room and they capitalized, Northern throwing to Blanton in the left flat, Blanton breaking a tackle and racing 55 yards for an 18-0 lead with 11:42 to go in the second quarter.
Holt put the Bull Dogs on the scoreboard with a 2-yard touchdown run to cap a 12-play, 60-yard drive midway through the quarter. Holt then converted a two-point conversion for an 18-8 deficit.
Columbus North drew within three points just before the half when Kelley connected with junior Weston Moore on a 23-yard touchdown pass. Junior Collin Ebel converted the extra-point kick.
The teams played a scoreless third quarter before the Bull Dogs took the lead on a 7-yard slant from Vogel to Moore with 3:14 left in the game. The TD capped a 14-play, 63-yard drive that included an 11-yard run by junior Barrett Branum on a fake punt on a fourth-and-9 play from CN's 38.
After one Jeff first down, CN appeared to have the hosts on the ropes when the Red Devils faced a fourth-and-10 from the Bull Dogs' 46. But on a play where Northern looked like he might be sacked, he someone escaped the defender and hit sophomore Brandon Coleman for a 26-yard gain. Northern then hit Coleman for 15 yards. Northern followed with a 5-yard quick slant to Allen as Jeff regained the lead with 2:18 to go.
Columbus North picked up one first down on its ensuing possession, but Simmons intercepted Vogel at the CN 49 and returned the ball to the 15. That set the stage for Allen's final score and the final margin.
