October 23, 2013Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Junior middle-hitter Makinsey Summa pounded down 14 kills and recorded six blocks Tuesday evening (Oct. 22), lifting the Columbus North volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Lawrence Central on Senior Night.
Recognizing senior libero Devon Roese in a pre-match ceremony, the Bull Dogs followed by posting a 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 25-15 victory over the visiting Bears in the Bill Stearman Athletic Complex.
Junior outside hitter Janelle Peters added 10 kills, two blocks and two aces for Columbus North, which improved its season record to 12-20 entering sectional play.
Junior Karen Wildemann contributed eight kills, one block, one ace and 36 assists, while sophomore middle Avery Wendel notched seven kills and three blocks. Junior right-side hitter Hayley McMahan chipped in five kills and one block, while freshman outside hitter Maliah Howard had three kills and three blocks. Junior defensive specialist Alexa Pelley also netted one kill.
Roese was CN's top back-row defender, recording 26 digs for the Bull Dogs. Pelley chipped in 20 digs.
Senior Allison Specker paced the Bears with 10 kills and one block, while senior Kennedy Brown tallied eight kills and one block. Sophomore Samantha Rodriguez had seven kills and one block, while sophomore Yasmene Leath offered five kills, two blocks and an ace. Junior Maddie Kupiainen had four kills.
The Bull Dogs jumped to a 5-1 lead in the first set and controlled it throughout, although LC did manage to make it close. The Bears led most of the second set, but a late CN rally -- sparked by McMahan serving and capped by a Peters-Wendel tandem block -- allowed the hosts to go up 2-0.
The visitors led throughout the third set and there was to be no rally, but Columbus North notched all three of its aces in the fourth set -- one by Wildemann and two by Peters -- to seize control and take the match.
Columbus North also won the JV match 25-15, 25-13. Lawrence Central did not field a freshman team.
The Bull Dogs' varsity returns to action at 11 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 26) when it faces Bloomington South (20-10) in the semifinals of the Bloomington North Sectional. Bloomington North will face either Columbus East or East Central in the second semifinal. The sectional final will be at 7 p.m. Saturday.
