Columbus North volleyball to meet Bloomington South in sectional

The Columbus North volleyball team will face Bloomington South in the semifinal round of the Sectional 14 tournament, according to pairings drawn Monday (Oct. 14) at the IHSAA offices in Indianapolis.
The match is set for 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at Bloomington North, site for all the matches in the five-team sectional competition.
The sectional opens at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 with Columbus East taking on East Central. That winner will face Bloomington North, which received a first-round bye, in the semifinal that follows the Columbus North-Bloomington South match.
The semifinal winners will return at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 for the sectional championship match.
Juniors Makinsey Summa and Janelle Peters pace the Columbus North (10-19) attack with front-line help from sophomore Avery Wendel, junior Hayley McMahan and freshman Maliah Howard.
Junior Karen Wildemann is the team's setter, while senior Devon Roese and juniors Hannah Vittorio and Alexa Pelley patrol the back line.
Sophomore Emily Ehman and juniors Abby Boatman and Brie Blume are the top attackers for Bloomington South (19-9), while senior Jacqueline Forney runs the show as the setter. Sophomores Ashlynn Fox and Sami Mehay also contribute on the front line, while junior Dominique Davis and Rachel Farrar are key back-row players for the Panthers.
Bloomington South defeated Columbus North 25-12, 25-18, 24-26, 25-20 on Oct. 8.
Columbus North its seeking its first sectional title, while Bloomington South chases its 14th sectional crown and first since 1996.
Class 4A No. 9 Columbus East (20-8) is the defending sectional champion and seeks its 21st sectional title, while East Central (15-11) seeks its 12th sectional title and first since 1992. Bloomington North (10-19) goes after sectional No. 7 and first since 2005.
This year's sectional winner will advance to a one-match regional on Oct. 29 that will be hosted by the Sectional 13 winner.
The regional winner advances to a four-team semistate on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Seymour.
The semistate winner qualifies for the one-match Class 4A state championship at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at Ball State's Worthen Arena in Muncie.
Sectional admission is $6 per session or $9 for an all-session pass.
