Columbus North football to face Jeffersonville in Sectional 8 opener

The Columbus North football team now knows its postseason path.
Two days after falling to Bloomington South 35-14, the Bull Dogs (3-5) learned Sunday (Oct. 13) that they will travel to Jeffersonville (4-4) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25 in the opening round of Class 6A Sectional 8.
The other first-round game in Sectional 8 is New Albany (6-2) at Center Grove (7-1).
The CN-Jeffersonville winner will face the New Albany-Center Grove winner in the sectional final on Friday, Nov. 1. If CN beats Jeffersonville, it will host the sectional final.
In Jeffersonville, the Bull Dogs are facing an opponent from the Hoosier Hills Conference, the same conference that includes local rival Columbus East. The Red Devils have won four sectionals over the years, the most recent in 2007, and no regionals. By contrast, Columbus North has won four sectionals and three regionals, the most recent of both in 2007. Neither team has ever won a semistate or state.
Senior Austin Hines is Jeffersonville's top rusher, while freshman Camaron Northern and sophomore Jamal Britt each has played quarterback. Sophomore Isaiah Blanton is the team's top wide receiver, while senior Dionte Allen has played tight end, running back and even QB in the Wildcat formation.
The Red Devils opened the season with victories over Evansville Bosse, Seymour, Bedford North-Lawrence and Madison, scoring 60 or more points in their first three games. But they have lost their last four games to Floyd Central, Providence, New Albany and Columbus East.
Junior Josh Holt has emerged as Columbus North's top runner. He has rushed for 740 yards and 12 touchdowns on 144 carries. Senior Michael Vogel has run for 437 yards and two TDs on 109 attempts.
Vogel and sophomore Mitchell Kelley each has played quarterback, Vogel throwing for 662 yards and eight TDs in about 6.5 games and Kelley passing for 212 yards and one TD in about 1.5 games. Junior Weston Moore is the Bull Dogs' top receiver with 28 catches for 459 yards and eight scores. Junior Jared Newkirk has 17 receptions for 213 yards.
Senior linebacker Luke Teague tops the CN defense with 55 tackles (37 solos, 18 assists). Junior Jacob Hamblin has added 47 tackles (27 solos, 20 assists) and sophomore Brice McDaniel has contributed 43 tackles (32 solos, 11 assists, two sacks). Hamblin and junior Collin Ebel have two interceptions apiece.
According to the latest Sagarin Ratings, Columbus North is the No. 3 team in the four-team sectional. The computer formula lists Center Grove as the No. 1 team in the state with a 105.05 rating. New Albany is second in the sectional and 64th overall with a 70.29 rating. Columbus North is next at No. 70 overall (69.21) and Jeffersonville is fourth at No. 101 (61.25).
Columbus North has won football sectionals in 1989, 2004, 2006 and 2007, all in Class 5A. It also claimed regional titles the last three of those seasons. Jeffersonville won football sectionals in 1987, 1991, 1998 and 2007, also all in Class 5A.
Over the years, Columbus High/Columbus North leads Jeffersonville 14-12 in a series that dates to 1941. The schools have met twice in postseason games, Jeffersonville winning a 1986 sectional game 27-12 and Columbus North taking a 2007 regional contest 42-6.
