Columbus East tops Columbus North 2-0 in girls soccer sectional final
October 13, 2013Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Molly Macy scored once in each half Saturday evening (Oct. 12), leading the Columbus East girls soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Columbus North for the Columbus North Sectional title.
Columbus North had several early chances, including one shot that hit the cross bar, but it was the Class 2A co-No. 20 Olympians who struck first when Macy converted a penalty kick in the 26th minute.
Macy scored off a feed from Sydney Newell to give Columbus East a 2-0 advantage near the midpoint of the second half, and the Bull Dogs were unable to find the net -- even on a penalty kick in the second half.
Senior Spencer Eudy played the entire game in goal for the winners, recording 11 saves. Freshman Charlotte Verbanic was in the nets the entire game for the Bull Dogs.
The Olympians (15-2-1) advance to the East Central Regional where they will face host East Central (16-1-2) at 6 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 16) in a semifinal game. Bloomington South (10-9-0) and New Castle (14-2-0) play in the second semifinal.
The regional championship will be at 6 p.m. next Saturday (Oct. 19).
Columbus North, which saw its streak of sectional championships end at six, concluded its season at 13-5-0.
