October 12, 2013Columbus North High School
JASPER, Ind. -- A fabulous season came to an abrupt finish Saturday (Oct. 12) when the Columbus North boys tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to Evansville Memorial in the Jasper Semistate.
The No. 7 Bull Dogs saw their season end at 19-1. The No. 6 Tigers improved to 18-0 and advance to the eight-team IHSAA team State Finals next Friday and Saturday (Oct. 18-19).
Sophomore Rahul Jha collected the only point for Columbus North, going three sets to defeat Memorial's Michael Koch 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.
The Bull Dogs, however, dropped two other three-set matches.
The Tigers' Erich Schuette defeated CN senior Luke Red 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Memorial's Brandon Wu and Chase Throop topped CN juniors Jake Likens and Anthony Sanders 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.
The Likens/Sanders' loss also eliminated the tandem from the individual doubles state tournament. Red had been ousted from the individual singles state tournament when he lost to Bloomington South's Will Piekarsky in the team regional.
Memorial won in straight sets at two positions. The Tigers' Chad Barron beat CN senior Krishan Narsinghani 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Also, the Tigers' Ryan Clark and Colin Throop blitzed CN sophomores Kevin Luo and Aditya Mantri 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Columbus North coach Kendal Hammel expressed disappointment in his team's performance in the semistate, but he acknowledged that many good things occurred over the season.
