Bloomington South football beats Columbus North 35-14
October 12, 2013Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Junior Bryce Stancombe passed for two touchdowns and ran for another Friday night (Oct. 11), sparking the Bloomington South football team to a 35-14 victory over Columbus North at Max Andress Field.
Senior Eli Eads added 185 yards and two touchdowns for the Panthers, who improved to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in Conference Indiana games while spoiling CN's Senior Night festivities.
Junior Josh Holt rushed for 99 yards and one score for the Bull Dogs, who dropped to 3-5 and 3-3. Senior Michael Vogel added 90 yards on 12 carries, while sophomore Mitchell Kelley passed for 146 yards and ran for 57 more. Junior Weston Moore caught four passes for 103 yards.
Turnovers were crucial in the contest, Columbus North committing four while coming up with just two takeaways.
Two of the turnovers contributed to Bloomington South building a 28-0 lead late in the first half, a fumble by CN junior Clay Roberts on the Panthers' 1 and an interception by Bloomington South senior Ramonee Bruce at the Panthers' 13 that he returned 80 yards to the Bull Dogs' 7.
Roberts' fumble was recovered in the end zone and the ball moved to the BS 20, and the Panthers followed by marching 80 yards capped by an Eads' 5-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
Bruce's interception came on the Bull Dogs' ensuing possession. Four plays after that, on fourth-and-goal from the 2, Eads bulled his way into the end zone for a 21-0 advantage.
Bloomington South opened the scoring on its first drive, Stancombe running 1 yard for a TD to complete a nine-play, 62-yard drive. The Panthers then made it 28-0 when Stancombe found junior Carson Lien for a 31-yard scoring pass to finish an eight-play, 79-yard drive with 3:18 to go in the half.
Columbus North countered South's fourth TD with a nine-play, 80-yard drive with Holt going the final 2 yards for a touchdown with 55.4 seconds left in the half.
Then when CN junior Clay Johnson came up with a recovery on the ensuing kick return, the first of two Bloomington South fumbles lost, the Bull Dogs halved the deficit when Kelley and junior Moore teamed for a 45-yard TD on a bubble screen with 14.4 seconds to go before intermission.
Kelley was intercepted for a second time on the opening possession of the third quarter, but the Panthers were unable to take advantage this time. Stancombe lost a fumble on the visitors' next possession, but Columbus North, with Vogel taking over at quarterback after Kelley injured an ankle, was unable to convert.
Taking over at its 38, Bloomington South used an Eads' 18-yard run, a Stancombe pass to junior Keenan Franz for 22 yards and another Eads run to move into scoring position. Stancombe than connected with Franz for a 3-yard TD early in the fourth quarter to account for the final score.
Columbus North returns to action at 7:30 p.m. next Friday (Oct. 18) when it visits Southport (8-0, 6-0). Bloomington South is at home at 7:30 p.m. next Friday against Perry Meridian (4-4, 2-4).
