Columbus North boys soccer blasts Scottsburg 7-0 in sectional semifinal

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Keaton Voegerl tallied two goals and two assists Wednesday evening (Oct. 9), leading the Columbus North boys soccer team to a 7-0 victory over Scottsburg in the semifinals of the Columbus North Sectional.
Senior Ethan Smith added two goals, while senior Parker Hirsch had a goal and two assists for the Class 2A No. 1 Bull Dogs (16-0-1), who moved into the sectional final at 2 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 12) back at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex.
CN will play Seymour, a 6-2 winner over Charlestown, for the sectional championship.
Smith sparked the Bull Dogs to a quick 2-0 lead against Scottsburg. He scored in the eighth minute off a feed from Hirsch, then found the net in the 22nd minute off a pass from Voegerl.
Senior Will Bridgeman, who had a goal and an assist, made it 3-0 in the 27th minute on a penalty kick. Columbus North then ended any doubt with a three-goal burst over the final four minutes of the first half.
Hirsch began that blitz with a goal off a pass from Bridgeman in the 36th minute. Voegerl finished the flurry with a pair of goals in the 38th and 40th minutes.
Sophomore Alan Rodriguez completed the CN scoring, scoring early in the second half off a feed from Voegerl.
Senior Matt Verplank played the first half in goal and did not have to make a save. Senior Ben Davis played the second half in goal, and he made one save over the final 40 minutes.
Columbus North, the defending Class 2A state champion, is chasing its seventh consecutive sectional crown and its 12th overall since the IHSAA began sponsoring the soccer state tournament in 1994.
