Columbus North ekes out 3-2 win over Bloomington South in tennis regional
October 9, 2013Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- It was a battle, but the Columbus North boys tennis team pulled out a 3-2 victory over Bloomington South on Tuesday (Oct. 8) in the first round of the Columbus North Regional.
Sophomore Aditya Mantri and junior Mitchell Miller teams to produce the decisive point, a 6-0, 6-4 victory over the Panthers' Rich Huang and Eric Johnsen in a match that started well after the other four because of court availability.
The outcome moved the No. 7 Bull Dogs (18-0) into the regional final at 5 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 9) against Scottsburg, a 3-2 winner over Greensburg.
Bloomington South took an early lead when sophomore Will Piekarsky defeated CN senior Luke Red 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. But Columbus North drew even when sophomore Rahul Jha claimed a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win over the Panthers' Sam Karcher at No. 3 singles.
The Bull Dogs moved ahead 2-1 when juniors Jake Likens and Anthony Sanders rallied for a three-set win over Bloomington South's Matt Johnsen and Alex Jung. A Likens forehand winner followed by a Sanders backhand cross capped the 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 decision.
It looked like CN sophomore Kevin Luo might post another three-set win when he went up 2-0, 30-love in the third at No. 2 singles. But that game slipped away and Bloomington South's Jake Frederickson ultimately took a 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 win for that point and a 2-2 deadlock.
That left the result hinging on the No. 2 doubles, where Mantri and Miller grabbed a quick first set and, despite a couple tense moments in the second set, captured the winning point. Miller's strong serve left no doubt in the final game of the second set.
"This was a hard-fought match, and there were moments where I didn't know which way it would go," Columbus North coach Kendal Hammel said. "But Rahul got things going our way and then Anthony and Jake just battled and battled and came through with a huge point.
"Kevin played really well for much of his match and almost was able to get another point, but then Aditya and Mitchell came through when we needed them to do so."
The regional winner advances to the Jasper Semistate at 10 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 12).
