Columbus North tops Columbus East 2-0 in boys soccer sectional opener
October 8, 2013Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Seniors Keaton Voegerl and Ethan Smith each scored in a short span late in the first half Monday evening (Oct. 7), lifting the Columbus North boys soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Columbus East in the first round of the Columbus North Sectional.
Senior Riley Belding assisted on both goals for the Class 2A No. 1 Bull Dogs (15-0-1) in a game moved to Max Andress Field because of wet conditions at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex.
The decision moved Columbus North into the sectional semifinals against Scottsburg. That game will be played about 8 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 9) at the Wigh Complex. It will follow the 6 p.m. semifinal game between Seymour and Charlestown.
In the first-round game, Columbus North had a couple of strong chances before Voegerl and Smith converted opportunities in the 32nd and 34th minutes.
Earlier, Olympians goalkeeper J.B. Baxter made a nice save on a Parker Hirsch header in the 18th minute. Baxter later stopped a strong shot by Voegerl in the 20th minute.
Senior Matt Verplank played the entire game in goal for the Bull Dogs, making three saves in posting the shut out. Columbus East completed its season with a 11-4-3 record.
Columbus North, the Class 2A defending state champion, is seeking its seventh consecutive sectional crown and its 12th since the IHSAA began sponsoring a soccer state tournament in 1994.
