Columbus North JV, freshman football teams split with Perry Meridian

Sophomore Tyler Wang scored three touchdowns and classmate Wyatt Barkes had a hand in two others Saturday (Oct. 5), lifting the Columbus North JV football team to a 41-34 victory at Perry Meridian.
Wang's touchdowns all came on the ground, while Barkes ran for one and passed for another as the Bull Dogs' JV improved to 5-2. Barkes' TD pass went to junior Michael Behling.
Junior Kaleb Steele also scored a touchdown for the Bull Dogs, who also saw junior Andrew Ng convert 5-of-6 extra-point kicks.
CN also was opportunistic on special teams, recovering three onside kicks. Sophomore Kendrick Clark captured two of them, and classmate Mitchell Essex came up with another.
At the freshman level, Columbus North scored touchdowns via the air, ground and on special teams, but it was not enough as the Bull Dogs dropped a 22-21 decision at home to Perry Meridian.
The setback dropped the CN rookies from the ranks of the unbeaten at 6-1.
Mitchell Burton scored one touchdown for the Bull Dogs on a 50-yard run. Cameron Wilson scored another on a 12-yard reception from Tanner Payne. Spencer West collected the third TD by covering a blocked punt in the Falcons' end zone.
Misael Garcia was 3-of-3 on extra points.
The Columbus North JV and freshman teams return to action at 10 a.m. next Saturday (Oct. 12) against Bloomington South. The JV will visit Bloomington, while the varsity will host the Panthers.
