COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Ethan Smith scored three goals and classmate Keaton Voegerl added two goals plus an assist Friday evening (Oct. 4), leading the Columbus North boys soccer team to a 6-1 victory over Fort Wayne Canterbury in their regular-season finale.
Senior Will Bridgeman chipped in a goal, while senior Andre Abedian contributed two assists for the Class 2A No. 1 Bull Dogs, who improved their record to 14-0-1 by overwhelming the 2A No. 2 Cavaliers at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex.
A Smith goal on a penalty kick in the 30th minute snapped a 1-1 tie and proved to be the game winner. Smith then added a pair of goals early in the second half, the first off an assist from Voegerl and the second off a feed from Abedian, as Columbus North broke the game open.
Voegerl made it 5-1 with an unassisted goal in the 55th minute and Bridgeman iced the game with senior goalkeeper Ben Davis earning an assist in the 79th minute.
Voegerl gave the Bull Dogs a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, converting a pass from Abedian. Canterbury countered with a goal from Britt Watts in the 13th minute and the game remained deadlocked for about 17 minutes before Smith's PK.
Senior Matt Verplank played the first 66 minutes in goal for CN, making one save. Davis played the final 14 minutes and posted two saves.
