Columbus East tops Columbus North 3-0 in volleyball

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- The Columbus East volleyball team defeated visiting Columbus North 3-0 on Thursday evening (Oct. 3).
The Class 4A No. 9 Olympians prevailed 25-10, 25-10, 25-21 to improve to 14-6.
Junior Makinsey Summa tallied nine kills and classmate Janelle Peters had seven kills to pace the Bull Dogs, who dropped to 8-15.
Junior Karen Wildemann produced 18 assists and seven digs. Senior Devon Roese notched a team-best eight digs, while junior Hannah Vittorio matched Wildemann with seven digs.
Senior Faith Myers paced the Olympians with 18 kills, four service aces and 30 assists. Senior Carly Robertson contributed 14 kills, while freshman Bailey Western had five blocks. Senior Alexa Husmann-Miller tallied 15 digs and senior Ashlyn Robbins notched 12 digs.
CN coach Caitlin Greiner lamented her team's start.
"We didn’t show up ready to play, which has been an ongoing battle with us lately," Greiner told The Republic. "We finally were able to wake up in the third set and were able to leave it all out on the court."
The coach also looked ahead to upcoming matches.
"We need to be more consistent and be mentally focused," Greiner told the newspaper. "We are young, but the experience is there, and we need to prove that when we play."
Columbus East also won both sub-varsity matches.
The Olympians took the JV match 19-25, 25-16, 25-10.
East captured the freshman match 25-14, 25-13.
Columbus North returns to action on Tuesday (Oct. 8) when it hosts Bloomington South in a Conference Indiana match. The JV and freshman matches begin at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows the JV about 7 p.m.
