Smith, Hirsch lead Columbus North boys soccer on Senior Night

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Ethan Smith scored three goals and classmate Parker Hirsch tallied two goals and two assists Tuesday evening (Oct. 1), leading the Columbus North boys soccer team to an 8-0 rout of Seymour at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex.
Celebrating "Senior Night" with an overwhelming win, 13 members of the Class of 2014 were recognized -- Smith, Hirsch, Ben Davis, Matt Verplank, Riley Belding, Hugh Hamill, Keaton Voegerl, Will Bridgeman, Sam Meyercord, Nate Blystone, Andre Abedian, Ryan Curlin, Zach Barnes. All but Verplank and Abedian started the contest.
Smith scored the game's first two goals as the Class 2A No. 1-ranked Bull Dogs improved to 13-0-1. The opener came on a penalty kick in the 21st minute and Smith's second tally came off a feed from Hirsch in the 33rd minute.
Hirsch helped make it 3-0 by the half, passing to Abedian for a goal in the 40th minute.
Hirsch scored twice early in the second half. Hirsch's first goal came off a pass from Voegerl in the 44th minute and his second tally was notched off a feed from Abedian in the 51st minute.
Smith completed his hat trick in the 53rd minute, converting a pass from Bridgeman.
Sophomore Alan Rodriguez and junior Byron Barger completed the scoring in the final 10 minutes. Rodriguez found the net in the 71st minute off a pass from Barger. Barger scored in the 78th minute off a pass from junior Jason Fier.
Davis played the first half in goal, while Verplank played the second half in goal. Neither faced a shot, while Columbus North peppered 34 shots at the Seymour goal.
Columbus North won the JV game 5-1. Sophomore Tyler Heathcote produced a goal and an assist, while other scores came from junior Fernando Medina, junior Jahir Sanchez, Rodriguez and freshman Sam LeVelle. Junior Chase Herrington also had an assist, while sophomore Preston Grimes and freshman Mark Tabor each played a half in goal.
The Bull Dogs return to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Oct. 4) when they host Class 2A No. 20 Fort Wayne Canterbury at the Wigh Complex. CN follows by playing Columbus East at 6 p.m. Monday (Oct. 7) in the first round of the Columbus North Sectional.
