Columbus North volleyball places seventh in New Albany Invitational

NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- Juniors Makinsey Summa and Janelle Peters each produced double-figure kills over four matches Saturday (Sept. 21), but the Columbus North volleyball team was able to prevail only once in the New Albany Invitational.
Summa totaled 24 kills and Peters had 15 for the day as the Bull Dogs saw their season record move to 7-10.
They opened the eight-team event by dropping all three pool-play matches -- 25-18, 25-21 to Castle, 25-18, 25-9 to Floyd Central and 25-15, 25-23 to Class 3A No. 10 Brownstown Central. CN ended the day by beating Jeffersonville 25-17, 25-13 in the seventh-place match.
Sophomore Avery Wendel and junior Hayley McMahan each chipped in nine kills, while freshman Maliah Howard tallied eight kills and junior Karen Wildemann contributed 60 assists.
Howard also provided six service aces, while junior Alexa Pelley notched five aces.
Summa and Wendel paced the front-row defense, totaling six and three blocks, respectively. In the back row, Wildemann, senior Devon Roese, junior Hannah Vittorio and Pelley all provided lifts. Wildemann led the group with 22 digs, while Roese had 21, Vittorio 20 and Pelley 17.
The Columbus North JV competed in the Roncalli Invitational on Saturday, while the CN freshmen went 2-2 in the CN Freshman Invitational.
Columbus North returns to action on Thursday (Sept. 26) when it visits Martinsville for a varsity-JV-freshman tripleheader. The JV and freshman matches begin at 5:30 p.m., and the varsity follows the JV at about 6:30 p.m. The Bull Dogs follow by competing in the Muncie Central Invitational next Saturday (Sept. 28).
