Columbus North girls golf shoots a 344 to win the Greensburg Sectional
September 22, 2013Columbus North High School
GREENSBURG, Ind. -- Junior Sydney Anderson shot a 2-over-par 72 on Saturday (Sept. 21), leading the Columbus North girls golf team to the championship of the Greensburg Sectional at Greensburg Country Club.
The No. 17 Bull Dogs' team score of 344 was two strokes better than No. 14 Columbus East, who produced a 346 total. Batesville placed third with a 373 followed by Greensburg with a 389, Rushville with a 391 and East Central with a 428.
The top three teams qualified for the New Castle Regional that will be played next Saturday (Sept. 28) at Westwood Golf Club. Competition there will begin at 10 a.m. and include the top three teams from the Anderson, Lawrence Central, Mt. Vernon (Fortville), Muncie South and Richmond sectionals.
The top three teams and the top five individuals not on an advancing team will qualify for the IHSAA State Finals on Oct. 4-5 at The Legends Golf Course in Franklin.
In the sectional, junior Morgan Deis chipped in an 88 for Columbus North while senior Sam McQueen carded a 91. Freshman Holly Anderson contributed a 93, and senior Lauren Backmeyer completed the Bull Dogs' lineup with a 95.
The sectional championship was the 17th for Columbus North and its first since 2010. The Bull Dogs go after the program's sixth regional crown. CN previous girls' golf regional titles came in 1978, 1979, 1982, 1984 and 1986.
Individually, Sydney Anderson's round matched her season-best 18-hole score and gave her the sectional medal. She finished six strokes better than runner-up Britney Biltz of host Greensburg. Madison McCreary of Batesville was third with a 79 followed by Columbus East's Caroline Smith with an 82 and the Olympians' Rebecca Smith with an 84.
Teams advancing from the other sectionals feeding the New Castle Regional are:
>> No. 6 Hamilton Southeastern (304), No. 5 Noblesville (325) and Fishers (372) from the Anderson Sectional.
>> No. 15 Cathedral (334), Bishop Chatard (374) and Lawrence North (374) from the Lawrence Central Sectional.
