Columbus North pulls out 21-20 football victory over Terre Haute South
September 21, 2013Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Just enough.
Just enough offense. Just enough defense. And most importantly, the Columbus North football team had just enough scoring Friday evening (Sept. 20) to pull out a 21-20 victory over Terre Haute South on homecoming at Max Andress Field.
Junior Collin Ebel converted 3-of-3 extra-point kicks, and the last of those proved decisive in a Conference Indiana encounter played in a light rain or steady drizzle throughout the game.
His final PAT came with 5:15 to go in the third quarter, immediately after senior Michael Vogel connected with junior Weston Moore on a 40-yard touchdown -- a play in which Moore dragged a Braves' defender the last 8 yards into the end zone.
"This game definitely was a struggle, but we had just enough of a run game and we threw the ball just well enough," said Columbus North coach Tim Bless, whose squad won its second game in a row to improve to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. "We knew Terre Haute South would present some big challenges, so we feel good that we were able to make enough plays to win the game."
The Braves (2-3, 1-2) opened the scoring late in the first period when senior Logan Deady covered 15 yards on a screen pass from junior Timmy Herrin to find the end zone. Senior Carter Hill's extra point made it 7-0.
The Bull Dogs tied the game midway through the second quarter when junior Josh Holt -- who finished with a game-high 92 yards rushing on 28 carries -- plunged into the end zone from the 1 to cap a 13-play, 64-yard drive.
Terre Haute South took advantage of a recovered squib kick to open the third quarter to go ahead 14-7. On the first play from scrimmage following the recovery, junior Michael Watt burst around left end, cut to his right and dashed 57 yards for a touchdown.
About three minutes later, Holt's 4-yard TD run pulled Columbus North even at 14. His score came six plays after Bull Dogs junior Clay Johnson recovered a fumbled punt at the Braves' 30.
THS responded with a quick strike, senior Jacob Johnson breaking a couple of tackles to turn a short pass from Herrin into a 50-yard touchdown. Hall, however, was unable to convert the extra point, leaving the door open for Columbus North to pull out a narrow victory.
After holding onto yet another Braves' squib kick at their own 40, the Bull Dogs moved 20 yards on four plays before Vogel and Moore connected for their long TD. Then when Ebel converted the extra point, CN took the lead for the first time and made it stand over the final 17:15.
Senior Logan Fox squelched one Terre Haute South threat with an interception at the Bull Dogs' 5 on the Braves' next possession. Columbus North followed with a pair of time-consuming drives while the CN defense limited THS to just 10 offensive plays over two possessions in the final period.
The Braves opened their last possession with a Herrin 12-yard pass to Johnson, but they netted just 3 yards over their next three plays before Fox broke up a fourth-down pass to give the Bull Dogs the ball one last time with 1:35 to go. After Holt broke free for a 16-yard gain on third down for a first down, Vogel knelt to end the game.
"We knew it would be tough sledding for Josh considering they have some big guys up front, including a Division I-commit in Junior Berry," Bless said. "But Josh gave a warrior effort, and our o-line provided just enough blocking for Josh to get stronger as the game went along."
The coach also had praise for the CN defense, which helped his squad move to 3-0 in its all-time series with Terre Haute South. The Bull Dogs beat the Braves in 2004 (56-14) and in 2007 (47-0).
"Herrin is a 6-5 lefty with a gun, and they've got athletes all over the field," Bless said. "While we didn't put him down a lot, we did put him on the run and got him out of his comfort zone. Other than three or four plays, our defense did a really good job."
For the game, Holt led the CN attack with his relentless style. But he was supported by Vogel, who completed 6-of-13 passes for 94 yards while also running for 47 yards on 15 carries. Moore finished with two receptions for 49 yards.
Watt paced the Braves' ground game with 59 yards on five carries, while senior Ian Newton had 44 yards on six attempts. Herrin passed for 128 yards and the two scores, but he completed just 9-of-25 attempts. Johnson was his top target with three catches for 75 yards.
Columbus North returns to action when it travels to Terre Haute North (3-2, 1-2) at 7:30 p.m. next Friday (Sept. 27). Terre Haute South is at home at 7:30 p.m. next Friday against Bloomington South (1-4, 0-3).
