Columbus North boys tennis slides past Bloomington South 4-1
September 18, 2013Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- The Columbus North boys tennis team prevailed in a pair of three-set matches Tuesday (Sept. 17), propelling the No. 10 Bull Dogs to a 4-1 victory over No. 24 Bloomington South.
Juniors Jake Likens and Anthony Sanders overcame a slow first set to recover for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Bloomington South's Matt Johnsen and Alex Jung at No. 1 doubles. That proved to be the decisive point as Columbus North moved to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in Conference Indiana.
Earlier, sophomores Rahul Jha, Kevin Luo and Aditya Mantri posted quick wins to give Columbus North two points. Luo and Mantri teamed to top the Panthers' Eric Johnson and Rich Huang 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles, while Jha defeated South junior Sam Karcher 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
CN senior Luke Red had to go to a tie-breaker to prevail at No. 1 singles. He outlasted Panthers sophomore Will Piekarsky 6-4, 5-7, 10-8, playing a tie-breaker instead of a complete third set because the match had been decided with the Bull Dogs' win at No. 1 doubles.
Junior Jake Frederickson captured the lone point for Bloomington South (5-3, 3-2). He defeat Columbus North senior Krishan Narsinghani 6-43, 6-4.
"This was a close, close match," Columbus North coach Kendal Hammel said. "It was closer than the (4-1) score indicates. We knew this would be a big match because of records, the conference and the competition.
"But our team is playing very well, and we competed well against a good team. Overall, this was a great match for us."
Columbus North returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 19) at Southport for its final Conference Indiana match of the season. The Bull Dogs follow by competing in the Silver Creek Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 21), facing the host Dragons, Greensburg and Heritage Christian.
