Columbus North boys tennis wins CN Invitational
September 14, 2013Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- The 12th-ranked Columbus North boys tennis team rolled to the championship of the Columbus North Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 14).
The Bull Dogs posted 5-0 victories over Martinsville and Batesville in the first two rounds, then completed the four-team round-robin competition with a 4-1 decision over Providence. The three wins moved Columbus North to 10-0 for the season in dual matches.
"Things pretty much went like I thought they would," CN coach Kendal Hammel said. "We made solid showings in the first and second rounds. Then in the third round, when we knew there would be more competition, we stepped up and played well again.
"I especially liked how we kept our focus when we had to play three matches in one day."
Senior Luke Red went 3-0 at No. 1 singles, while juniors Anthony Sanders and Jake Likens went 3-0 at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Rahul Jha went 2-0 at No. 3 singles, while sophomore Aditya Mantri and junior Mitchell Miller went 2-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Sophomore Kevin Luo also went 2-0 for the day, 1-0 at No. 3 singles and 1-0 at No. 2 doubles when paired with senior Kamal Maharjan. That was Maharjan's only varsity match for the day.
Senior Krishan Narsinghani went 2-1 for the day at No. 2 singles.
Columbus North blitzed Martinsville in the opening match, dropping a combined three games in five matches. The Bull Dogs won four matches in straight sets against Batesville, Narsinghani completing the sweep when he prevailed in a tie-breaker.
In the final match against Providence, the Bull Dogs won four points in straight sets while suffering their lone defeat of the day when the Pioneers' Jacob Quinkert beat Narsinghani 6-1, 6-2.
