Holt helps Columbus North top Franklin Central 30-8
September 14, 2013Columbus North High School
INDIANAPOLIS -- Now that was Columbus North football the way coach Tim Bless wants it to be played.
Led by 141 yards and four touchdowns from junior running back Josh Holt, the Bull Dogs pounded out a 30-8 victory over host Franklin Central in a Conference Indiana encounter.
"Being the first time that I was playing offense this season, I was eager to run but anxious at the same time," said Holt, who had TD runs of 17, 3, 9 and 13 yards, one in each quarter. "I didn't come into the game with the intention of scoring four touchdowns. I just wanted to keep the chains moving.
"The big thing was our offensive line. They and our H-back (junior Jonathan Byers on most plays) did a great job opening holes. I just ran, and it felt great."
Bless said he was happy with all his players, who snapped a three-game skid to move to 1-3 for the season and 1-1 in league games. Franklin Central fell to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in CI.
"I'm very proud of our kids," Bless said. "To weather the storm of three rough weeks, they came back with a great week of practice and a great week of preparation. Then in this game, to show the poise they did after a poor start, that also shows the character of this group."
Columbus North started in a 2-0 hole when Franklin Central recorded a safety on the Bull Dogs' first possession. That came after the CN defense stopped the Flashes from scoring with Columbus North taking over on its own 7-yard line. But three plays later, CN quarterback Michael Vogel was tackled in the end zone, and the Flashes led.
After forcing a Franklin Central punt, Columbus North used a nine-play, 76-yard drive to take the lead. Holt capped the march by bursting 17 yards for a score with 2:50 left in the opening period.
The Bull Dogs extended their advantage to 14-2 midway through the second quarter, covering 67 yards in five plays. A reverse pass, junior Weston Moore throwing 51 yards to senior Jared Newkirk, ignited the drive. Holt followed with four consecutive runs, the last being a 3-yard touchdown.
CN pushed the count to 17-2 following a 51-yard drive. Junior Collin Ebel converted a 29-yard field goal to cap a 13-play march highlighted by a 19-yard run by Vogel.
A three-and-out gave Columbus North one more chance to score before the half. However, Ebel's 26-yard field goal attempt from the left hash mark was wide left.
The Bull Dogs made it 23-2 on the opening possession of the third quarter, a 14-play drive covering 65 yards. Vogel's 23-yard pass to junior Barrett Branum converted a third-and-20 to keep the drive alive. Holt finished it off with a 9-yard TD.
Ebel stopped a Franklin Central drive late in the third quarter when he made an interception in the end zone, but the Flashes cut into their deficit in the fourth quarter when senior Corey Durm connected with senior receiver Marcel Price for a 43-yard score.
CN responded with one last drive, going 60 yards in 12 plays with the front line of center Ezra Followell, guards Tyson Clark, Cameron Miller and Kenny King, tackles Trevor Shutters and Tyler Combs and tight ends Jonathon Weaver and Drew Schoeberl paving the way. Facing a fourth-and-4 from the Flashes' 13, Holt went over the left side and broke free for a 13-yard score.
Byers complemented Holt in the Columbus North ground game with 51 yards on nine carries. Junior Kaleb Steele added 47 yards on 10 attemps, while Vogel ran 15 times for 22 yards. Vogel completed 5-of-12 passes for 84 yards, while Newkirk finished with three receptions for 70 yards and Moore had two catches for 42 yards.
Senior Robi Ford paced the Franklin Central offense with 113 yards on 19 carries. Normal starter, junior Aaron Austin, rushed just two times for 3 yards. He did not enter the game until the second quarter, and he suffered an apparent ankle injury on his second carry. Durm completed just 1-of-13 passes.
"This is how we like our football team to play," Bless said. "While we strive for a balance of running and passing, if we have to choose, we'll go with a two-back power game."
With CN outgaining Franklin Central 399-199, the coach also had praise for the Bull Dogs' defense.
"They really started to come together last week (in a 19-14 loss to Bloomington North)," Bless said. "You take away three big plays, and they overall had a good game. They're working hard to play at the speed they need to so they can have success."
Holt, who also plays safety on defense, said the victory was important to the Bull Dogs.
"We really rallied together," he said. "And getting a win, it means everything."
