September 9, 2013Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Rahul Jha won in straight sets at No. 3 singles and both doubles teams also prevailed Saturday (Sept. 7), leading the Columbus North boys tennis team to a 3-2 victory over Center Grove in a matchup of top-20 squads.
The No. 13 Bull Dogs pulled off a rankings' upset to move their record to 6-0 for the season, beating the No. 10 Trojans (3-5) for the first time in program history, according to CN coach Kendal Hammel.
"This was a big win for our team and program," Hammel said, noting the first-time win over Center Grove. "All of our positions played well. Rahul and both doubles teams played strong and aggressive. We really saw improvement in those positions from all players."
Jha defeated Center Grove junior Casey Fellers 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while juniors Anthony Sanders and Jake Likens as well as sophomores Aditya Mantri and Kevin Luo were winners in doubles.
Sanders and Likens beat Trojans senior Vaughn Knutson and sophomore Ty Thixson 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles. Mantri and Luo topped CG senior Alex Canner and junior Drew Walterman 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Center Grove junior Conner Anderson and sophomore Peter Golder captured triumphs in the top two singles spots. Anderson defeated CN senior Luke Red 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Golder beat Bull Dogs senior Krishan Narsinghani 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
At the JV level, Center Grove prevailed 8-2. The Columbus North fell to 4-2 in dual matches as a group.
Columbus North returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 10) when it visits Pike. The Bull Dogs follow by hosting Perry Meridian at 6 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 12).
