Columbus North volleyball places second in North Central Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Columbus North volleyball team went 2-1 Saturday (Sept. 7) in the North Central Invitational to place second in the four-team, round-robin event.
The Bull Dogs opened the event by beating Connersville 25-20, 25-22. They followed by falling to Park Tudor 23-25, 25-21, 15-13. CN closed the event by knocking off the host Panthers 25-16, 25-13.
"We played very well," Columbus North coach Caitlin Greiner said. "After dropping the third game to Park Tudor, we did a good job of refocusing and not letting up against North Central. Everyone played well together. The energy was high all day."
Junior Makinsey Summa pounded down 21 kills and classmate Janelle Peters had 13 over the three matches to pace the Bull Dogs (4-3). Junior Karen Wildemann contributed nine aces, six blocks and 45 assists, while senior Devon Roese tallied five aces and Summa had four aces and five blocks. Sophomore Avery Wendel also had five blocks.
Peters led the back-row defense with 22 digs. Roese added 18 digs and Wildemann notched 17 digs. Also, junior Hannah Vittorio posted 16 digs, junior Alexa Pelley tallied 13 digs and freshman Maliah Howard had eight digs.
Park Tudor went 3-0 for the day to claim first place. Connersville defeated North Central to go 1-2 and place third. NC was 0-3 and finished fourth.
The Columbus North JV won a pair of matches at the event. The Bull Dogs' JV topped Connersville 25-17, 25-18 and blitzed Park Tudor 25-10, 25-16.
Junior Autumn Kavelman and sophomore Anne Marie Kiel each tallied eight kills to lead the JV. Sophomore Grace Sonderman notched seven aces with 18 digs, while sophomore Hannah McKinney had six aces and 23 assists. Sophomore Rachel Copeland had five aces, while Kavelman also provided 10 digs.
Columbus North returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 10) when it visits Pike for a varsity-JV-freshman tripleheader. JV and freshman matches begin at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows the JV about 7 p.m.
CN follows with a tripleheader on Thursday (Sept. 12) at Center Grove, then competes next Saturday (Sept. 14) in the Jennings County Invitational. The Bull Dogs will face Southwestern (Shelby) at 9 a.m., Jennings County at 10 a.m. and Ben Davis at 11 a.m. in the Jennings County tournament.
