Three to lead Columbus North boys basketball in Hall of Fame Classic
September 5, 2013Columbus North High School
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- Jason Speer had words of praise for junior Josh Speidel and seniors Evan Henry and Elliott Welmer on Wednesday (Sept. 4).
The Columbus North boys basketball coach was speaking about the Bull Dogs' trio of returning starters at the annual Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame picnic at Pebble Brook Golf Club, an event designed to promote the City Securities Hall of Fame Classic.
Columbus North will play in the 37th annual boys' event, facing Evansville Harrison in a first-round game on Saturday, Dec. 28 at the New Castle Fieldhouse. Class 3A state champion Greensburg will face Mt. Vernon (Fortville) in the opening first-round game at 11 a.m. A consolation game is set for 6 p.m. and the championship game will follow at about 8 p.m.
Speer spoke of Speidel's inside-outside game and how he creates matchup problems for opponents. The coach said Henry is a good scorer and ballhandler who has transitioned from a shooting guard as a freshman and sophomore to a point guard as a junior and senior. Speer also noted Welmer's development and how he has emerged as a capable scorer, both from long range and around the basket, for the 23-2 Bull Dogs.
Evansville Harrison coach Bryan Speer talked about how his team could feature the four Duncan brothers in the upcoming season. Senior Ernie Duncan enters his final season with more than 1,100 points, while junior twins Everett and Stanley Duncan are strong complementary players. Brandon Duncan, a freshman, also figures to see court time for the Warriors, 22-2 last season.
The event's first game features a rematch of a Class 3A semistate from March. Greensburg won that game, went on to win the title and returns all five starters led by seniors Bryant McIntosh and Sean Sellers from a 27-1 squad. Mt. Vernon (Fortville) finished the season ranked first in the Class 3A poll and is led by senior C.J. Coleman.
The 2013 Hall of Fame Classic girls' tournament will be on Dec. 27. Homestead will play Rushville in the opening game, and Class 4A state champion Bedford North Lawrence meets Pike in the second game. Consolation and championship games will be that evening.
Columbus North's boys hosted the 1984 boys' tournament at a time when the event rotated sites around the state. Columbus North's girls were champions of the 2012 girls' tournament.
Tickets for the 2013 tournaments will be available at participating schools in early December.
