September 4, 2013Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Ethan Smith scored two goals Tuesday evening (Sept. 3), sparking the Columbus North boys soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Bloomington North at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex.
Smith's first goal capped an early flurry and proved decisive by snapping a 1-1 tie in the game's fourth minute. He found the net on the play off an assist from senior Keaton Voegerl. Smith's second goal was an insurance tally, an unassisted marker in the game's 80th minute as the Class 2A No. 1 Bull Dogs improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Conference Indiana.
Sophomore Sam Snider gave Columbus North a quick lead with a goal in the second minute off a feed from senior Riley Belding. The Cougars tied the game in the third minute when Gabe Zelaya scored off a pass from Zach Veldman, but then the Voegerl-Smith combination gave CN the lead for good in the fourth minute.
The Bull Dogs -- who outshot Bloomington North 12-9 -- extended their advantage in the 63rd minute when senior Parker Hirsch converted a feed from senior Andre Abedian. Smith then iced the decision with his goal in the final minute.
Senior Matt Verplank played the entire game in goal, recording four saves.
In the JV game, sophomore Tyler Heathcote, freshman Alex King and junior Fernando Medina each scored one goal and junior Chase Herrington assisted all three as Columbus North prevailed 3-1. Sophomore Preston Grimes recorded one save in the first hal, while freshman Mark Tabor had four saves in the second half.
Columbus North returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 5) when it visits Franklin Central in another CI encounter. The Bull Dogs follow by visiting Westfield at 11:30 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 7).
