Columbus North boys soccer tops Jasper 3-2

JASPER, Ind. -- Senior Keaton Voegerl's goal in the 76th minute snapped a 2-2 tie Saturday (Aug. 24), lifiting the Class 2A No. 1 Columbus North boys soccer team to a 3-2 victory over host Jasper.
Voegerl's decisive goal was his second of the game and came off a set piece on a corner kick. Senior Riley Belding took the corner from the left side and put the ball in near the Wildcats' goal. CN junior Andrew Gold then played the ball to Voegerl, who knocked the ball into the net for the game winner.
Jasper's Caleb Williams gave the host's a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 25th minute, but Voegerl tied the game when he scored off a feed from senior Will Bridgeman in the 34th minute.
The Wildcats regained the lead in the 41st minute when Nathan Helsley found the net. But the Bull Dogs (2-0-0) drew even for a second time when Belding converted a penalty kick in the 47th minute.
The game stayed deadlocked until the final minutes when Belding, Gold and Voegerl teamed to put CN ahead for good.
Senior Matt Verplank played the entire game in goal for Columbus North, making four saves. The Bull Dogs outshot the Wildcats 12-8.
Jasper won the JV game 2-0. Sophomore Preston Grimes made four saves for the Bull Dogs, who dropped to 1-1-0.
Columbus North returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 29) when it hosts Cathedral at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex. The Bull Dogs face Columbus East next Saturday (Aug. 31) in the annual quadruple-header -- boys JV at 2 p.m., girls JV at 4 p.m., boys varsity at 6 p.m. and girls varsity at 8 p.m.
