SHELBYVILLE, Ind. -- The Shelbyville volleyball team defeated Columbus North 3-1 on Thursday evening (Aug. 22) in the season-opening match for the Bull Dogs.
The host Golden Bears improved to 1-1 after falling to Franklin on Tuesday (Aug. 20) in their opener.
"We came out strong in Game 1, but we lost a little momentum after that," CN coach Caitlin Greiner said of the 19-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19 setback. "It came down to too many mental and unforced errors on our side."
Senior Tessa Krempel recorded nine kills, while junior Janelle Peters notched six kills and classmate Makinsey Summa had five kills to pace the Bull Dogs' attack. Juniors Hannah Vittorio and Karen Wildemann struck from the service line, Vittorio with eight aces and Wildemann with six.
Defensively, senior Devon Roese had 34 digs, junior Alexa Pelley had 29 digs and Vittorio had 24 digs to lead the CN back row.
The coach praised Summa and Vittorio for their play.
"Makinsey had moments where she was dominating the court," Greiner said. " And Hannah did a good job defensively."
The Bull Dogs won the JV match 25-15, 25-24. Junior Autumn Kavelman tallied four kills, and classmate Taylor Stamper had three kills and three aces to lead the team. Sophomore Rachel Copeland added three aces, while Kavelman and sophomore Grace Sonderman each produced 21 digs.
Columbus North returns to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 27) when it hosts Bloomington North in its Conference Indiana opener. It follows by hosting Heritage Christian at 7 p.m. next Thursday (Aug. 29).
