Home » Gymnastics NewsColumbus North gymnasts place fourth in state meetMarch 17, 2013 Columbus North High School MUNCIE, Ind. -- Senior Chelsea Wieland placed ninth in the floor exercise and freshman Katrina May was 13th in the all-around Saturday (March 16), leading the Columbus North gymnastics team to a fourth-place finish in the IHSAA State Finals at Ball State University's Worthen Arena.
Wieland, who had a score of 9.400 on floor, posted the highest placement of any CN gymnast in an individual event as the Bull Dogs competed in the State Finals for the seventh consecutive season.
May, meanwhile, amassed a score of 36.500 in the all-around as Columbus North put together a 109.875 as a team. Portage won the 41st annual competition with a 112.600 followed by Valparaiso with a 112.100 and Fort Wayne Dwenger with a 110.975. Columbus East placed fifth with a 107.660.
Wieland, who finished 19th in the all-around with a 35.525, added a huge individual honor when she was presented the IHSAA's Mildred M. Ball Mental Attitude Award. The award is presented annually to a senior participant in the state finals who is deemed to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in gymnastics.
Wieland was part of three Columbus North state finalist teams, serving as team captain the last two seasons. She ranks seventh in her senior class of 439 students, is a member of the National Honor Society, secretary of her senior class and is a member of the Student Assembly and Spanish Club. She plans to attend the University of Indianapolis to study Physical Therapy and compete as a pole vaulter.
In the competition, senior Danielle McDermott added a 23rd-place finish with a 35.125 in the all-around for the Bull Dogs while junior Megan Heathcote and sophomore Kaitlyn Barnes competed select events.
May was 11th on bars with a 9.250, tied for 19th on vault with a 9.400, tied for 17th on floor with a 9.125 and tied for 24th on beam with a 8.725.
In addition to her floor performance, Wieland tied for 21st on bars with an 8.850, placed 23rd on beam with an 8.800 and was 46th on vault with an 8.475.
McDermott, competing despite a severe ankle injury two weeks ago, placed 15th on bars with a 9.100, tied 28th on vault with a 9.225, was 31st on floor with an 8.750 and placed 45th on beam with an 8.050.
Heathcote tied for 14th on floor with a 9.175, tied for 19th on vault with a 9.400 and was 30th on bars with an 8.625. Barnes was 35th on beam with an 8.425.
"Chelsea winning the Mental Attitude Award was really sweet, and she was only about two-tenths away from making the podium on floor," CN coach Sandy Freshour said. "Danielle also came out and gave it her all, while Katrina did a good job overall and so did Megan and Kaitlyn.
"All in all, a final four finish is excellent. I am proud of how these girls competed."
Behind Mackenzie Barcelli’s all-around title, top-ranked Portage earned the team title. It was the school’s second state title in the sport, its first since 1975 and eighth state title in all sports in school history. The Indians last won state championships in 1999-00 in boys cross country and 3A softball.
Barcelli, a senior, captured the floor exercise with a score of 9.675 and added second-place finishes on bars (9.650) and balance beam (9.350). She also was ninth on vault with a 9.650.
Angola junior Alex Nickel was second with a 38.150 followed by Valparaiso senior Morgan Algozine (37.925), Logansport freshman Kelley Platt (37.200), Fort Wayne Dwenger junior Katy Linvill (37.150) and Morgan Township freshman Kylee Maxwell (37.150).
Other event winners were Algozine on vault (9.875) and bars (9.700) as well as Owen Valley freshman Anna Watkin on beam (9.575).
