Franklin Central defeats Columbus North 69-54 in boys basketball regional

March 9, 2013
Columbus North High School

SEYMOUR, Ind. -- The third-ranked Columbus North boys basketball team fell into an early hole and never was able to dig its way out Saturday (March 9), dropping a 69-54 decision to Franklin Central in the semifinal round of the Class 4A regional at Seymour.
Senior Forrester Sims scored a game-high 21 points to lead three players in double figures for the Flashes (12-10), who jumped to a 15-0 advantage in the first quarter and led from start to finish in earning a spot in the regional championship at 8 p.m. Saturday.
FC will face No. 13 Jeffersonville (23-3), which knocked off No. 4 Evansville Harrison 73-62.
Junior Jacob Malone contributed 15 points and junior Lucas Huffman chipped in 14 points for Franklin Central, which converted 55 percent from the field (26 of 47) in the victory over Columbus North (23-2). The Flashes were even hotter from long range, sinking 64 percent (7 of 11) from 3-point range.
The Bull Dogs, meanwhile, went scoreless for much of the first quarter before final converting a couple of shots for a 15-4 deficit at the first stop. They made a run to trail by eight in the middle of the second quarter, but a CN turnover led to a Franklin Central burst and the Flashes took a 36-23 edge at intermission.
Columbus North used a strong surge early in the third quarter to cut the margin to six points, but Franklin Central called timeout, recovered and pushed the count to 50-46 at the period's end.
The Flashes continued to thrive in the early stages of the fourth quarter, pushing its lead to 58-36, before CN cut the final margin to 15 in the late stages of the game.
Junior Evan Henry scored 18 points and senior Sawyer Glick netted 10 points to pace the Bull Dogs, who picked an inopportune moment to have a sub-par shooting day. They made just 37 percent of their shots (19 of 52), including only 29 percent (4 of 14) from 3-point land.
Franklin Central also seemed quicker to the boards, claiming a 33-24 rebound edge as it avenged a 76-65 setback to Columbus North from early in the season.
In the second game, Jeffersonville senior Darryl Baker came up with a number of big plays and junior Dre Ellis connected on several 3-pointers to lead the Red Devils past Evansville Harrison (22-2).
