Home » Gymnastics NewsColumbus North gymnasts qualify for state meetMarch 9, 2013 Columbus North High School COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Chelsea Wieland placed second in one event and freshman Katrina May was second in another and fourth in the all-around Friday evening (March 8), leading the Columbus North gymnastics team to a runner-up team finish in the Columbus East Regional.
The host Olympians won the competition with 108.000 points, while the Bull Dogs totaled 107.325 points. Both schools will advance as teams to the IHSAA State Finals next Saturday (March 16) at Ball State University's Worthen Arena in Muncie.
Connersville placed third with a 105.550 followed by Seymour with a 101.850 and Hagerstown with a 100.550.
Wieland recorded a 9.525 to place second in the floor exercise, while May was runner-up in the uneven parallel bars with a 9.300.
May was the Bull Dogs' top performer in the all-around, placing fourth with a 36.325. She also tied for third on vault with a 9.500, placed ninth on floor exercise with a 9.100 and was 14th on balance beam with an 8.425.
Junior Megan Heathcote and Wieland were CN's other all-around athletes. Heathcote was seventh with a total of 35.625, while Wieland was ninth with a 35.375.
Heathcote's event results included a 9.375 on vault, good for seventh place; a 9.200 on floor, good for eighth place; an 8.500 on beam, good for 11th place; and an 8.550 on bars, good for 14th place.
Wieland added the following scores to her floor routine -- an 8.825 on bars, good for 11th place; an 8.375 on beam, good for 15th place; and an 8.650 on vault, a tie for 20th place.
Senior Danielle McDermott competed only on bars, tying for ninth with an 8.850, while sophomore Kaitlyn Barnes competed on beam, floor and vault. She was 10th on beam with an 8.575, tied for 20th on vault with an 8.650 and placed 21st on floor with an 8.325.
Columbus East senior Daran Brady won the all-around with a 37.400. She was followed by Owen Valley freshman Anna Watkin (37.125) and Bloomington North senior Laura O'Connor (36.475).
Brady also took blue ribbons on bars with a 9.350 and floor with a 9.700. Columbus East sophomore Emily Clancy prevailed on vault with a 9.675, and Connersville sophomore Sydney Huber took the beam with a 9.375.
The top two teams and the top six athletes in individual events and the all-around qualify for the state meet.
