Columbus East, Bloomington South advance in boys basketball sectional

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Nate Rich scored 18 points and junior Bryce Lienhoop added 17 Tuesday evening (Feb. 26), leading the Columbus East boys basketball team to a 76-65 victory over Shelbyville in the first round of Class 4A Sectional 14 at Columbus North.
Senior Kyle Taylor, senior Connor Jensen and senior Zach Martindale each added 11 points for the Olympians, who improved to 14-6 and earned a date with host Columbus North (21-1) in the semifinal round at 7:30 p.m. Friday (March 1).
Lienhoop grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and Taylor dealt a game-best eight assists for Columbus East, which seized control of the game in the third quarter and pulled away over the final period.
Junior Reilly Reinbold scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures for Shelbyville (6-15). Sophomore Mitchell Orem and senior Ethan Runnebohm each scored 15 points, and junior Adam Eads had 14 points.
In the opening game on Tuesday, junior Keaton Hendricks poured in 25 points to propel Bloomington South past East Central 65-50. Junior Noah Marks and freshman Tucker Blackwell each pitched in 12 points for the Panthers (11-10), who will face rival Bloomington North (12-8) in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday (March 1).
Marks pulled in a game-high 12 rebounds for Bloomington South, while sophomore Johnny Jager and sophomore Josh Martindale each had three assists.
Junior Howie Backherms scored 17 points and senior Payton Stonefield netted 13 to lead the Trojans (12-11).
The winners of Friday's semifinal games will meet for the sectional championship at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (March 2).
