Home » Swimming & Diving NewsColumbus North boys swimmers reach championship finals in six eventsFebruary 22, 2013 Columbus North High School INDIANAPOLIS -- Juniors Cody Taylor and Sam Loescher each qualified for championship finals in two individual events Friday evening (Feb. 22), leading the Columbus North boys swimming team in the preliminaries of the IHSAA State Finals.
Taylor and Loescher were joined by sophomore Matt Freudenthaler and senior Sam Parker on the 200 free relay and 400 free relay, both of which also earned spots in the championship finals at the Natatorium at IUPUI.
The finals begin at 1 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 23).
Taylor posted the third-fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke with a clocking of 56.53 seconds. That was just more than one second behind Carmel's Brennan Berger, the top qualifier in 55.42.
Taylor also qualified sixth in the 200 individual medley in 1:53.98. The No. 1 seed is Chesterton's Blake Pieroni, who was timed in 1:49.96.
Loescher qualified fourth in the 100 free and eighth in the 50 free. He was timed in 45.88 in the 100, where Pieroni again was the fast qualifier in 44.48. Loescher posted a 21.19 in the 50, where Austin Flager of Northridge touched first in 20.57.
Taylor, Loescher, Freudenthaler and Parker combined to qualify third in the 200 free relay in 1:25.77. North Central was tops in that event in 1:24.42.
Parker, Loescher, Freudenthaler and Taylor flipped their order but were third again in the 400 free relay in 3:07.92. Chesterton qualified first in a state-record 3:01.05.
Parker qualified 19th in a pair of individual events. He posted a 1:45.06 in the 200 free, well behind top qualifier Ethan Whitaker of Chesterton (1:38.77). Parker clocked a 4:44.67 in the 500 free. Bloomington North senior Max Irwin was the No. 1 qualifier in that event in 4:28.48.
Chesterton's Aaron Whitaker set two more state records while earning top seeds in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke. He was timed in 47.84 in the former and 47.37 in the latter.
Chesteron also was the top qualifier in the 200 medley relay. The Trojans were clocked in 1:33.07 in that event.
