Home » Girls' Basketball NewsBedford eliminates Columbus North in girls basketball regionalFebruary 17, 2013 Columbus North High School BEDFORD, Ind. -- Sophomores Jenna Allen and Alexa Bailey each scored 20 points Saturday (Feb. 16), leading No. 2 Bedford North Lawrence to a 71-45 victory over No. 1 Columbus North in a Class 4A regional semifinal.
Junior Sammy Dillman contributed nine points and classmate Brittani Rizzi had eight points for the Lady Stars, who improved to 25-0 and advanced to the regional final later Saturday (Feb. 16) against No. 9 Franklin Central. The Flashes earned their spot in the regional final with a 51-34 victory over Castle (19-5).
Sophomore Ali Patberg paced Columbus North (25-1) with 13 points. Senior Hanna Ballard and junior Tayler Goodall each netted nine for the Bull Dogs, who were unable to defending the regional crown they had captured in 2012.
The teams exchanged the lead in the early going before Bedford North Lawrence used a late first-quarter burst that extended through the second quarter to take a 38-17 lead at the half. Allen scored 12 points and Bailey and Dillman each had nine over the first two quarters.
Columbus North rallied in the third quarter, cutting its deficit to 10 points in the period as Ballard scored seven points and sophomore Hannah Poindexter scored four. But the Lady Stars steadied themselves and pushed the count to 46-32 at the third stop.
The Bull Dogs tried to extend the game in the fourth quarter, but Bailey scored six points and Rizzi, McBryde and junior Whitney Wilson each scored five in the frame as BNL closed out the decision.
Bedford North Lawrence dominated the boards, grabbing 52 to just 36 for Columbus North. The Lady Stars also converted 49 percent of their shots (24 of 49). The Bull Dogs mustered just 22 percent accuracy (14 of 64), including just 4-of-29 in the first half and 0-of-12 in the second quarter.
BNL (26-0) later won the regional championship with a 58-51 victory over Franklin Central (20-5).
