Home » Girls' Basketball NewsColumbus North gets past Bloomington South 66-45 in girls sectional finalFebruary 10, 2013 Columbus North High School COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Ali Patberg scored 27 points Saturday evening (Feb. 9), leading the Columbus North girls basketball team to a 66-45 victory over Bloomington South for the Sectional 14 championship at Columbus East.
Junior Tayler Goodall chipped in 13 points and senior Hanna Ballard added 10 points for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 25-0 while claiming the program's second consecutive sectional title and 15th crown over the years. Junior Kelsey Cunningham and sophomore Hannah Poindexter each netted seven points for CN.
Junior Lauren Whitlatch scored 19 points and classmate Mackenzie McNew tallied 15 to lead the Panthers (15-8). Senior Lexi Ingram contributed seven points and senior Holly Cornwell had four points.
Patberg scored eight points and Goodall added five as Columbus North used an early burst to take a 20-6 lead in the first quarter. Patberg had four and Goodall three as CN pushed its edge to 32-16 at the half.
Patberg netted six, Goodall five and Poindexter four as the Bull Dogs kept a 48-35 lead after three quarters, Whitlatch and McNew each scoring nine in the period.
Patberg scored nine and Ballard added five in the final quarter as Columbus North pulled away before both teams cleared their benches with just more than a minute remaining.
Columbus North's victory earns it a spot in the Bedford North Lawrence Regional next Saturday (Feb. 16). Franklin Central (19-4) and Castle (19-4) will square off in the opening game at 10:30 a.m., and the Bull Dogs and host Bedford North Lawrence (24-0 meet in the second semifinal about noon. The regional championship will be about 8 p.m. next Saturday (Feb. 16).
The regional champion advances to a semistate game against the winner of the Decatur Central Regional. The semistate will be played Feb. 23 at either the Tiernan Center in Richmond or back at Bedford North Lawrence.
