Columbus North runs past Jennings County 68-38 in girls basketball

    NORTH VERNON, Ind. -- Senior Hanna Ballard scored 16 points to lead three players in double figures Thursday evening (Jan. 31), leading the Class 4A No. 1 Columbus North girls basketball team to a 68-38 victory over host Jennings County.
    Junior Taylor Goodall added 14 points and junior Emmy Schabel contributed 11 points for the Bull Dogs, who completed the regular season with a 23-0 record, matched a school record with 23 wins for the season and extended their school-record winning streak to 23 in a row.
    Sophomore Ali Patberg chipped in eight points, while junior Kelsey Cunningham netted six points and sophomore Macy Wingham had four points.
    Sophomore Halea Petro scored 12 points and junior Emily Ertel had 10 to pace the Panthers (8-12).
    Ballard scored six points and Schabel had three as Columbus North took a 13-9 edge in the first quarter. Goodall netted four points and freshman Paige Littrell three as CN pushed the count to 24-18 at the half.
    Goodall scored five and Ballard, Patberg and Cunningham had four apiece as the Bull Dogs broke the game for a 45-31 lead at the third stop. Schabel tossed in six points while Ballard and Wingham each scored four as the Bull Dogs pulled away over the final eight minutes.
    Last season's CN squad finished 23-4, setting the previous school record for wins in a season.
    Columbus North also won the sub-varsity games.
    Freshman Elle Williams scored 10 points and sophomore Jessica Wagers added eight points as the Bull Dogs won the JV game 46-22. Freshman Emma Ballard chipped in six points while sophomore Sheyanne Street and sophomore Debie Gedeon each added five as the CN junior varsity finished its season 17-0. Freshman Marisa Biehle led Jennings County with seven points.
    In the freshman game, Lauren Imlay scored 14 points and Makayla Caudill tallied eight points as Columbus North prevailed 46-21. Katie Carlson, Kara Linn and Hannah Frey each added six points, while Sarah Tran had four points as the Bull Dog rookies completed their season at 15-1. Katelyn Madinger scored nine points and Miranda Yonts had eight points for the Panthers.
    The Columbus North varsity returns to action at 7:30 p.m. next Friday (Feb. 8) when it plays in the Columbus East Sectional. The Bull Dogs drew a first-round bye and will play the winner of a game Tuesday (Feb. 5) between Bloomington North and East Central. Columbus East and Bloomington South will play the first first-round game at 6 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 5). That winner will face Shelbyville at 6 p.m. Friday (Feb. 8). The sectional semifinal winners will square off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 9) for the sectional title.
