January 26, 2013Columbus North High School
Senior Sam Parker captured one individual event and helped two relays to victories Saturday (Jan. 26), helping the Columbus North boys swimming team to a runner-up finish in the Conference Indiana meet.
Parker captured the 200-yard free in 1 minute, 47.91 seconds. He also helped the Bull Frogs to two relay titles -- the 200 free relay in a meet record 1:27.22 and the 400 free relay in 3:13.43 -- as CN totaled 371 points, 70 behind champion Bloomington North.
Bloomington South was third with 346.5 points followed by Franklin Central with 256.5 and Pike with 241.5. Perry Meridian (195), Lawrence Central (153.5) and Southport (53) completed the eight-team competition.
Junior Sam Loescher, junior Cody Taylor and sophomore Matt Freudenthaler joined Parker for the 200 free relay, which bettered the previous mmet record of 1:28.06 set in 2012 by a Bloomington South quartet. Taylor, junior John Rupp and Loescher teamed with Parker on the 400 free relay.
Other highlights for the Bull Frogs included runner-up efforts in four events -- Parker in the 500 free in 4:55.00, Taylor in the 200 individual medley in 1:56.20, Freudenthaler in the 100 fly in 54.83 and Loescher in the 100 free in 47.41.
CN also was third in the 200 medley relay, Taylor, Rupp, Freudenthaler and Loescher posting a time of 1:38.72. Columbus North coach Jim Sheridan noted that Loescher's anchor leg on the medley relay would have been third in state last season in the 50 free.
"Our men became a family with great leadership to the runner-up position," Sheridan said, adding that CN swimmers posted 37 season bests and 27 lifetime bests.
The Bull Frog boys return to action at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 29) when they visit Southport for a dual meet. The Columbus North girls swimming team is back in action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 31) when CN hosts the sectional preliminaries. The girls swimming sectional finals begin at 9 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 2).
