BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Freshman Katrina May won two events and the all-around competition Wednesday evening (Jan. 23), leading the Columbus North gymnastics team to a convincing victory at Bloomington South.
The Bull Dogs swept the top five spots in the all-around en route to a team score of 105.900, well ahead of the host Panthers' 98.925.
May won the uneven parallel bars with a 9.275 and the balance beam with a 9.000. She also was second on floor exercise with a 9.000 while totaling 35.725 in the all-around.
Junior Megan Heathcote won the vault with a 9.025 and was second in the all-around with a 34.350, while senior Chelsea Wieland won the floor with a 9.475 and was fourth in all-around with a 32.675.
Senior Danielle McDermott, competing in all-around for the first time this season, was second on bars (8.925), second on beam (8.500) and placed third in the all-around with a 34.200. Senior Emma Geilker placed fifth in the all-around with a personal-best performance.
"Emma had the best night of her high school career," CN coach Sandy Freshour said. "As someone who worked her way up from the junior varsity to varsity and now to an all-around position, it is very cool for her and great to see as a coach. She did a great job of setting us up on the beam and finished fourth in the event."
Freshour said she was pleased with the team's overall performance.
"It wasn't our best effort, but we had a lot of good efforts," the coach said. "It was our first away meet for a number of our athletes and they had to get used to different equipment. This experience will help us for the (Conference Indiana meet) because Bloomington South hosts that as well (on Feb. 16)."
The Bull Dogs return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 29) when they visit Seymour. Their next home meet is at 7 p.m. next Thursday (Jan. 31) when they host Martinsville.
