Home » Girls' Basketball NewsColumbus North defeats Southport 67-56 in girls basketballJanuary 11, 2013 Columbus North High School COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Ali Patberg and junior Tayler Goodall combined for 48 points Thursday evening (Jan. 10), leading the Class 4A No. 1 Columbus North girls basketball team to a 67-56 victory over Southport in Memorial Gym.
Patberg scored 25 points and Goodall netted 23 for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 18-0 overall and 5-0 in Conference Indiana while participating in a "Coaches vs. Cancer" game. Senior Hanna Ballard added eight points and freshman Paige Littrell contributed five points for CN.
Senior Grace Clark scored 17 points to pace the Cardinals (7-6, 1-4). Sophomore Shayla Wright chipped in 16 points, and senior Bria Wright netted 13 points.
Shayla Wright dropped in five 3-pointers and 15 points in the first quarter as Southport took a 21-12 lead. However, Patberg scored 11 points and Goodall tallied seven in the second period as Columbus North roared back to take a 37-30 lead at the half.
The Bull Dogs maintained their edge throughout the third quarter and early in the fourth before the Cardinals -- who saw Clark score 13 of her points after the intermission -- rallied to within two points. But CN responded with one more burst to claim the decision, Patberg scoring eight points and Goodall six in the final period.
Columbus North also won the JV game 46-21. Sophomore Sheyanne Street tallied a game-high 17 points to lead the Bull Dogs (12-0). Sophomore Jessica Wagers and freshman Elle Williams each added six points, and freshman Emma Ballard chipped in five points. Sophomore Quincey Rust scored nine points to lead Southport.
There were a number activities in conjunction with the "Coaches vs. Cancer" theme, most coordinated by Hanna Ballard as part of her Senior Project. Among the special events were a silent auction, a hula-hoop contest, a bake sale and a Wall of Hope.
Columbus North returns to action on Tuesday (Jan. 15) when it travels to Franklin. The JV will begin at 6 p.m., and the varsity will follow about 7:30 p.m. There will not be a freshman game.
