Home » Girls' Basketball NewsColumbus North defeats East Central 64-42 in girls basketballJanuary 8, 2013 Columbus North High School COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Hanna Ballard and juniors Kelsey Cunningham and Tayler Goodall paced a balanced attack Tuesday evening (Jan. 8), leading the Class 4A No. 1 Columbus North girls basketball team to a 64-42 victory over visiting East Central.
Ballard, Cunningham and Goodall each scored 11 points for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 17-0. Sophomore Ali Patberg chipped in nine points, and eight other players scored as the hosts won their 36th game in their last 37 outings.
Freshman Allie McCool scored nine points and junior Brittanie Bolten had eight points for the Trojans (11-3).
The teams went back and forth in the early going with a 3-pointer by CN junior Emmy Schabel at the first-quarter buzzer giving the Bull Dogs a 16-15 edge.
Cunningham and Patberg each scored six points in the second quarter, and freshman Paige Littrell added three as CN used a 15-4 flurry for a 31-19 lead at the half.
Goodall scored seven points, and Cunningham and Hanna Ballard each added five in the third quarter as Columbus North pushed the count to 53-29 at the third stop.
Sophomore Jessica Wagers scored four points in the final period as CN used mostly reserves over the final eight minutes.
Columbus North also won both games at the sub-varsity level.
Sophomore Macy Wingham scored 10 points and classmate Debie Gedeon added eight points as the Bull Dogs rallied for a 30-25 victory in the JV game. Junior Emmy Schabel chipped in six points for CN (11-0), which used a game-closing 17-4 burst to overcome a 21-13 deficit. Sophomore Bridget Bedel topped East Central with 10 points.
In the freshman game, Kara Linn tossed in 11 points and Makayla Caudill netted 10 points as Columbus North prevailed 33-20. Emily Kim and Lauren Imlay each chipped in six points for the Bull Dogs (10-1), who used a 15-2 second quarter to overcome an early deficit and take control. Madison Wiedeman led the Trojans with seven points.
Columbus North returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 10) when it hosts Southport in a Conference Indiana game. The JV game begins at 6 p.m., and the varsity game follows about 7:30 p.m. There is no freshman game. The Southport game is CN's "Coaches vs. Cancer" game, and fans are encouraged to attend this game and support the cause.
