COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Freshman Katrina May captured the all-around blue ribbon and a first place on uneven parallel bars Monday evening (Jan. 7), leading the Columbus North gymnastics team to a season-opening victory over visiting Bloomington North.

Senior Chelsea Wieland captured two events and was second in the all-around for the Bull Dogs, who outscored the visiting Cougars 105.425-93.825.

May posted a score of 9.400 to prevail in the bars en route to an all-around total of 35.375. She also placed second on vault with a 9.025, tied for second on beam with an 8.125 and was second on floor exercise with an 8.825.

Wieland was the runner-up in the all-around with a 34.850. She won the beam with an 8.225 and the floor with a 9.400. She also was third on bars with an 8.825.

Junior Megan Heathcote won the vault with a 9.225 and was third in the all-around with a 33.500, while sophomore Kaitlyn Barnes placed fourth in the all-around with a 32.650.

"You never know where you are going to start, but everybody did something well and we had a nice team effort," Columbus North coach Sandy Freshour said. "What impressed me most is when someone made an error, they bounced back well.

"I really like that as part of their complexion, the way they competed. I was very pleased overall."

Columbus North returns to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 9) when it hosts rival Columbus East.
