NEW CASTLE, Ind. -- Junior Tayler Goodall knocked down five first-half 3-pointers en route to a game-high 23 points Friday evening (Dec. 28), lifting the Class 4A No. 2 Columbus North girls basketball team to a 63-55 victory over Class 2A No. 1 Evansville Mater Dei for the championship of the City Securities Hall of Fame Classic.
Sophomore Ali Patberg added 19 points and junior Kelsey Cunningham contributed 14 for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 14-0 with the decision in the 29th annual four-team event that benefits the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame museum. Senior Hanna Ballard chipped in five points and sophomore Hannah Poindexter had two for the winners.
Junior Maura Muensterman tallied 22 points and sophomore Tori Schickel had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Wildcats (12-1).
The teams battled in the early going, but Goodall got hot to help Columbus North surge to a 29-20 halftime lead. The Bull Dogs pushed their advantage to 40-26 in the third quarter, but the Wildcats rallied late in the period and into the fourth -- cutting the margin to four late in the game.
With the game on the line, Goodall converted 2-of-2 free throws and Cunningham made 4-of-4 as the Bull Dogs pulled way for the eight-point victory.
Earlier Friday, Goodall scored 19 points and Patberg netted 14 as Columbus North defeated Class 4A No. 1 Hamilton Southeastern 53-30 in the first round. Cunningham chipped in six points and Poindexter had five as the Bull Dogs used a strong second quarter to break open a close game.
Senior Taya Reimer led Hamilton Southeastern with 10 points, while senior Jessica Pongonis and junior Lindsay Walton each added six points.
Muensterman scored a tourney semifinal-record 40 points as Mater Dei rolled past Class 4A No. 4 Logansport 83-54 in the other first-round game. Schickel added 17 points and a tourney-record 18 rebounds for the Wildcats, while Logan junior Whitney Jennings led the Berries with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
In the third-place game, Whitney Jennings scored 19 points and senior sister Rachel Jennings had 18 as Logansport (12-1) posted a 50-40 victory over Hamilton Southeastern (11-2). Pongonis led the Royals with 14 points.
Goodall's outstanding effort resulted in her being voted MVP of the event. Others joining her on the six-player all-tournament team were Patberg, Muensterman, Schickel, Whitney Jennings and Rachel Jennings.
