Home » Boys' Basketball NewsColumbus North boys basketball reaches semifinals of Bob Wettig Inv.December 29, 2012 Columbus North High School RICHMOND, Ind. -- Junior Evan Henry scored 15 points Friday night (Dec. 28), including a crucial fourth-quarter 3-pointer, to lift the Columbus North boys basketball team to a 53-45 victory over Tipton and into the semifinals of the Bob Wettig Invitational.
Sophomore Josh Speidel added 10 points and senior Tori Jackson contributed eight for the Class 4A No. 14 Bull Dogs (7-1), who led most of the way against the Class 2A No. 2 Blue Devils (7-1). Speidel also provided eight rebounds, while senior Garrett Larson dealt a team-high three assists.
However, Tipton used a late third-quarter, early fourth-quarter burst to take a 39-37 edge midway through the final period. Henry then responded with his 3-pointer to give the lead back to Columbus North.
After a basket by Tipton's Nate Friend gave the Blue Devils a 40-39 edge, Speidel produced a three-point play and Larson followed with two free throws and the Bull Dogs never trailed again.
Senior Mike Crawford topped Tipton with 30 points and 11 rebounds. Blake Hoover added eight points, while Austin Hooker contributed 10 rebounds.
Columbus North advanced to the semifinal round at 1 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 29), where it will face host Richmond (7-2).
The Bull Dogs -- defending champs in the 16-team event -- will play again Saturday in either the championship (7:30 p.m.) or third-place game (6 p.m.). Depending upon results, CN will face either Class 3A No. 7 Guerin Catholic (9-1) or Class 4A No. 11 Jeffersonville (7-1).
In the opening round on Thursday (Dec. 27), junior Elliott Welmer scored 19 points to lead five Bull Dogs in double figures in an 86-67 victory over the Richmond junior varsity.
CN was to play Louisville Moore in the first round, but Moore was unable to make the trip in time for the game because of inclement weather. Thus, the Richmond JV served as a replacement team for this game slot in the tournament.
Jackson added 15 points, Speidel 13, senior Sawyer Glick 12 and senior Connor Oren 11 as the Bull Dogs took a 34-24 lead at the half and broke the game open with a 29-18 third-quarter edge.
Micheal Tillman led the Richmond JV with 20 points.
