Home » Boys' Basketball NewsColumbus North boys basketball set to defend title in Bob Wettig Inv.December 25, 2012 Columbus North High School The Columbus North boys basketball team will defend its championship in the Bob Wettig Invitational beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 27) in Richmond.
The Bull Dogs (5-1) will face Louisville Moore (9-4) in a first-round game in the 16-team event where each team plays four games over three days.
Most games will be played in the Tiernan Center at Richmond High School; some games will be played at Earlham College in Richmond.
Junior Evan Henry and sophomore Josh Speidel each average 14.0 points to pace a balanced Columbus North lineup. Senior Sawyer Glick contributes 13.3 points and senior Tori Jackson adds 13.2 points, while senior Clint Cunningham chips in 6.3 points and junior Elliott Welmer nets 4.8 points.
Jackson is averaging a double-double with 10.3 rebounds. Speidel adds 4.7 rebounds and Glick averages 4.2 rebounds. Glick also produces team highs of 2.3 assists and 2.8 steals.
CN defeated Columbus East 69-59 on Dec. 18 in its most recent game.
Louisville Moore enters the Bob Wettig Invitational off a 59-50 loss to Louisville Central. The Mustangs went 28-5 last season and are led by a set of brothers, senior Jamon Sanford and junior Jaelin Sanford.
Coach Richard Gatewood believes Jaelin Sanford to be one of the best on-ball defenders in Kentucky and one of the Bluegrass state's most underrated point guards. He is complemented by senior Izajah Armstrong, who provides grittiness and toughness to the backcourt.
Senior James Yates along with senior Damon Robinson, a transfer from Louisville Trinity, lead the front court. Junior Justin Richards, a transfer from Louisville Manual, is another front-court prospect. Another player to watch is junior Darrion Jackson.
The Columbus North-Moore winner will face the winner of the Tipton-Connersville game at 7 p.m. Friday. The losers of those two first-round games will play each other at noon Friday.
Tipton (6-0) is led by Mike Crawford, a high-scoring 6-5 senior who has signed to attend Saint Louis University. Connersville (4-3) is paced by a trio of seniors -- Sean Davis, Dakodah Carlin and Charles Peterson.
Other teams in CN's half of the bracket are Indianapolis Tindley (6-0), Richmond (5-2), Bishop Chatard (3-2) and Floyd Central (2-4).
Teams in the other half of the bracket are Rock Creek Academy (4-4), Jennings County (5-2), Portage (4-3), Guerin Catholic (7-1), Mount Lebanon (Pa.) (3-3), East Central (2-4), Indianapolis Metropolitan (3-5) and Jeffersonville (5-1).
In 2011, Columbus North went 4-0 to claim the event championship. The Bull Dogs defeated Tipton 73-64, Floyd Central 44-37, Richmond 70-69 and Guerin Catholic 54-49.
The pairings for the 2012 event are below.
