Home » Girls' Basketball NewsColumbus North girls basketball wins Subway/Columbus North InvitationalDecember 23, 2012 Columbus North High School COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Ali Patberg and juniors Kelsey Cunningham and Tayler Goodall combined for 48 points Saturday night (Dec. 22), leading the Class 4A No. 2 Columbus North girls basketball team to a 57-35 victory over Class 4A No. 6 Fort Wayne South for the championship of the Subway/Columbus North Invitational.
Patberg totaled 19 points, Cunningham 15 and Goodall 14 as the host Bull Dogs (12-0) claimed the title in the inaugural eight-team event with three wins in 26 hours.
CN opened with a 65-33 triumph over Avon on Friday night (Dec. 21). The Bull Dogs edged Class 4A No. 7 Roncalli 40-37 early Saturday (Dec. 22), then closed the two-day event with the convincing triumph over the Archers.
In the title game, Fort Wayne South -- led by 11 points from junior Brittni Clopton and nine from senior Lynnia Noel -- took a 16-9 lead at the first stop.
But Columbus North, with five points from Cunningham and four from Patberg, rallied for a tie at 22 at the half. Cunningham scored eight points, Patberg added five and Goodall had four in the third quarter as the Bull Dogs seized a 41-29 edge. Patberg then netted eight points and Goodall four in the final period as the CN sealed the decision.
Earlier Saturday, Goodall scored 19 points and Cunningham added 12 as Columbus North rallied from a halftime deficit to slip past Roncalli.
Goodall tied a school-record by making six 3-pointers en route to her game-high output, while Cunningham sank four 3-pointers and freshman Paige Littrell had one trey as the Bull Dogs sank 11 shots from behind the arc.
Freshman Lindsey Corsaro scored 13 points and senior Bridget Perry tallied 11 to pace the Rebels (11-3), who knocked off Class 3A No. 2 Norwell 63-45 in the third-place game. The Knights finished the day at 8-2.
Fort Wayne South (9-2) advanced to the championship game with a 65-48 victory over Class 3A No. 2 Norwell.
In the consolation semifinals, Class A No. 1 Fort Wayne Canterbury defeated Avon 80-59 and Notre Dame Academy (Ky.) knocked off Class 4A No. 18 Mishawaka 76-60. Mishawaka outlasted Avon 57-40 in the seventh-place game and Fort Wayne Canterbury beat Notre Dame Academy 73-55 in the third-place game.
Canterbury finished the day at 10-2, Notre Dame Academy at 7-4, Mishawaka at 8-3 and Avon at 3-8.
