COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Ali Patberg and juniors Kelsey Cunningham and Tayler Goodall combined for 48 points Saturday night (Dec. 22), leading the Class 4A No. 2 Columbus North girls basketball team to a 57-35 victory over Class 4A No. 6 Fort Wayne South for the championship of the Subway/Columbus North Invitational.
Patberg totaled 19 points, Cunningham 15 and Goodall 14 as the host Bull Dogs (12-0) claimed the title in the inaugural eight-team event with three wins in 26 hours.
CN opened with a 65-33 triumph over Avon on Friday night (Dec. 21). The Bull Dogs edged Class 4A No. 7 Roncalli 40-37 early Saturday (Dec. 22), then closed the two-day event with the convincing triumph over the Archers.
In the title game, Fort Wayne South -- led by 11 points from junior Brittni Clopton and nine from senior Lynnia Noel -- took a 16-9 lead at the first stop.
But Columbus North, with five points from Cunningham and four from Patberg, rallied for a tie at 22 at the half.     Freshman Lindsey Corsaro scored 13 points and senior Bridget Perry tallied 11 to pace the Rebels (11-3), who knocked off Class 3A No. 2 Norwell 63-45 in the third-place game. The Knights finished the day at 8-2.
Fort Wayne South (9-2) advanced to the championship game with a 65-48 victory over Class 3A No. 2 Norwell.
