Goodall's 20 help Columbus North top Avon 65-33 in girls basketball

    COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Junior Tayler Goodall scored 20 points to lead three players in double figures Friday night (Dec. 21), sparking the Class 4A No. 2 Columbus North girls basketball team to a 65-33 victory over Avon in the first round of the Subway/Columbus North Invitational.
    Sophomore Ali Patberg added 12 points and junior Kelsey Cunningham chipped in 10 for the Bull Dogs (10-0), who will face Class 4A No. 7 Roncalli (10-2) in a semifinal game at 11:45 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 22). The Rebels advanced with a 56-40 win over Class A No. 1 Fort Wayne Canterbury.
    Goodall scored seven points and Patberg and Cunningham each tallied three as Columbus North opened a 17-8 advantage in the first period. Patberg and Cunningham each helped the Bull Dogs push the count to 32-21 at the half, then senior Hanna Ballard and sophomore Jessica Wagers each tallied four points as CN led 50-31 at the third stop. Goodall then tallied eight points as the Bull Dogs close with a strong fourth quarter.
    Ballard and sophomore Hannah Poindexter finished with six points apiece, while Wagers netted four for Columbus North.
    Junior Rachel Griffin scored 10 points to pace Avon (3-6). Freshman Taylor Speckman contributed nine points and freshman Shelle Daniels netted eight points for the Orioles.
    Other first-round results included Class 3A No. 2 Norwell defeating Notre Dame Academy (Ky.) 65-46 and Class 4A No. 6 Fort Wayne South outlasting 4A No. 18 Mishawaka 73-50.
    The Saturday morning session games include Avon meeting Fort Wayne Canterbury (8-2) at 10 a.m. in Gym 1 as well as Notre Dame Academy (6-3) facing Mishawaka (7-2) at 10 a.m. in Gym 2.
    In the championship semifinals at 11:45 a.m., Columbus North faces Roncalli in Gym 1 and Norwell (8-0) meets Fort Wayne South (8-1) in Gym 2.
    The 10 a.m. losers play at 3:30 p.m. in the seventh-place game in Gym 2. The 10 a.m. winners play at 3:30 p.m. in the fifth-place game in Gym 1. The 11:45 a.m. losers play in the third-place game at 5:15 p.m. in Gym 1. The 11:45 a.m. winners play in the championship game at 7 p.m. in Gym 1.
