Goodall's hot shooting lifts Columbus North over Columbus East 60-38

December 20, 2012
Columbus North High School

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Junior Tayler Goodall poured in a career-high 23 points Wednesday evening (Dec. 19), leading the Class 4A No. 2 Columbus North girls basketball team to a 60-38 victory at rival Columbus East.
Goodall drained five 3-pointers en route to her game-high total as the Bull Dogs (9-0) used a strong second half to break open a game that was close for two quarters.
Goodall's previous high was 22 points in a game in 2011-12 at Lawrence Central. Her five 3-pointers were one off the school record of six in a game, set by Karen McCaa in 1988-89 and matched by Caroline Sanders in 2007-08.
Sophomore Ali Patberg chipped in 14 points, while senior Hanna Ballard and freshman Paige Littrell each added five points. For the game, CN sank 10 3-pointers with six players making at least one shot from beyond the arc.
Freshman Audrey Wetzel scored 13 points to pace Columbus East (5-4). Senior Mikala Lomax added seven points and junior Courtney Hunter had six.
The host Olympians led most of the first half with Wetzel scoring six points, Lomax five and Hunter, Bellinger and junior Sarah Loesch four points apiece. But the Bull Dogs, despite dealing with some foul trouble, rallied in the second quarter to take a 27-24 edge at the half.
Goodall sparked the second-quarter surge, draining three 3-pointers for nine points, while Patberg contributed six points and freshman Jessica Wagers had two points.
Patberg scored three buckets in the third quarter as Columbus North pushed its advantage to 45-35. Then Goodall tallied seven points as the visitors pulled away for good in the final eight minutes.
Columbus North also won both sub-varsity games.
Sophomore Sheyanne Street scored 15 points and classmate Macy Wingham added 11 as the Bull Dogs posted a 59-35 victory in the JV game. Sophomore Megan Bandy and freshman Emma Ballard each chipped in eight points, and freshman Elle Williams had seven for CN. Freshman Bryn Eudy scored 14 points to lead Columbus East.
In the freshman game, Emily Kim tallied 12 points and Lauren Imlay netted 11 as the Columbus North rookies prevailed 44-15. Kara Linn added nine points, while Allison Bates and Makayla Caudill each had six for the Bull Dogs. Maddy Zeigler paced Columbus East with six points.
The Columbus North varsity returns to action at 6:30 p.m. Friday (Dec. 21) when it hosts Avon in the first round of the eight-team Subway/Columbus North Invitational.
The other 6:30 p.m. game Friday pits Fort Wayne Canterbury against Roncalli, while 8:15 p.m. encounters include Norwell against Notre Dame Academy (Ky.) and Fort Wayne South against Mishawaka.
    Tournament action continues with second-round games at 10 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 22). Placement round games are at 3:30 p.m., 5:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 22).
