Home » Girls' Basketball NewsColumbus North girls basketball rallies to edge Lawrence Central 40-39December 17, 2012 Columbus North High School COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Ali Patberg scored 23 points and classmate Hannah Poindexter sank a key fourth-quarter free throw Saturday afternoon (Dec. 15), helping the Columbus North girls basketball team pull out a 40-39 victory over Lawrence Central in Memorial Gym.
Junior Emmy Schabel contributed eight points for the Class 4A No. 2 Bull Dogs, who improved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in Conference Indiana with the result.
Senior Calyn Hosea dropped in 13 points and junior Kyra Tucker had 10 points for the Bears (3-5, 0-3).
The visitors used a strong third quarter to take a 33-30 edge at the third stop. But Columbus North rebounded in the final period to squeeze out the narrow victory on its home court -- Patberg scoring nine points in the period and Poindexter adding a free throw with 3:19 to go to provide the decisive point.
Lawrence Central had a chance to win in the final 25 seconds after Columbus North was called for traveling. However, CN junior Kelsey Cunningham forced a held ball on the Bears' Breanna Jones with 7.6 seconds left.
LC had the possession arrow and got two shots in the remaining time, but Calyn Hosea missed a running layup attempt and McKenzy Telfair missed a putback attempt and Cunningham corraled the rebound to seal the outcome.
Columbus North also won the JV game 44-16. Sophomore Megan Bandy led a balanced Bull Dogs' attack with nine points. Sophomore Macy Wingham and freshman Elle Williams each added seven points. Sophomore Sheyanne Street chipped in six points and freshman Emma Ballard had five points. Tajhanae Gillard and Leah Hamilton each netted four points to lead Lawrence Central.
The Bull Dogs return to action Wednesday (Dec. 19) when they visit city-rival Columbus East (5-3). JV and freshman games will begin at 6 p.m., and the varsity will follow the JV about 7:30 p.m.
