Home » Boys' Basketball NewsPike nips Columbus North 76-74 in boys basketballDecember 17, 2012 Columbus North High School INDIANAPOLIS -- Senior Zavier Turner scored 22 points Friday night (Dec. 14), including a jump shot as time expired, lifting the Class 4A No. 2 Pike boys basketball team to a 76-74 victory over Columbus North.
Senior Taishaun Johnson added 16 points for the Red Devils, who improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in Conference Indiana. Jamie Rutherford contributed 15 points and Anthony Patterson had 12 for the winners, who played without leading scorer Jordan Pickett.
The decision gave Red Devils coach Bill Zych his 300th career victory. He now is 300-264 in 26 seasons overall, 45-13 in his third season at Pike.
The 4A No. 14 Bull Dogs -- who received a late a 3-pointer from junior Evan Henry to tie the game at 74 -- dropped to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Sophomore Josh Speidel and senior Tori Jackson paced Columbus North with 16 points each. Senior Sawyer Glick added 15 and Henry had 13 for the Bull Dogs, who rallied from a 58-47 third-quarter deficit in a game that had five lead changes and six ties.
Pike also won the JV game 49-45. Chris Adams scored 14 points and Jordan Marshall chipped in nine for the Red Devils. Sophomore Trent Larson netted 20 points and junior Christian Glass had 11 for the Bull Dogs.
The Red Devils also captured the freshman game 59-28. Derek Hawthorne scored 12 points and Jaren White had nine to pace Pike. Collin Lollar scored a game-high 14 points for the Bull Dogs (2-3).
Columbus North returns to action on Tuesday (Dec. 18) when it hosts city-rival Columbus East (4-0). JV and freshman games begin at 6 p.m. The varsity will follow the JV about 7:30 p.m.
