INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Sophomore Ali Patberg scored eight of her 21 points in the fourth quarter Saturday night (Dec. 8), sparking the Class 4A No. 2 Columbus North girls basketball team to a 54-48 victory over Class 4A No. 5 Greenwood at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Freshman Paige Littrell came off the bench to add 11 points for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 6-0 in the battle of undefeated teams. The Lady Woodmen fell to 8-1 with the setback.
Junior Tayler Goodall chipped in nine points and junior Kelsey Cunningham tallied eight for Columbus North, which used a strong second quarter to claim a 34-26 lead at the half. Littrell as well as sophomore Macy Wingham, junior Emmy Schabel and sophomore Jessica Wagers each provided valuable minutes in the second quarter with teammates in foul trouble.
But Greenwood, behind six points from senior Deauna Evans and three from senior Kelsie Ratliff, rallied for a 36-36 tie late in the third quarter.
However, with Patberg and Cunningham combining, the Bull Dogs used a 6-3 burst to close the period. Then Patberg, Goodall and Littrell each converted opportunities in the fourth quarter as Columbus North held off Greenwood's comeback attempt.
Evans shared game-high scoring honors with 21 points for the Lady Woodmen. Freshman Holly Hoopingarner contributed nine points, while Ratliff netted eight and senior Sheridan Estell had six.
The game was played as the finale of the five-game Hoosier Invitational at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Other results in the event were:
-- Girls: Lapel 51, Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter 43
    -- Boys: Frankfort 58, Delphi 32
    -- Boys: Danville 67, Cascade 58
-- Boys: Mt. Vernon (Fortville) 48, New Castle 39
The Columbus North-Greenwood girls played their JV game on Thursday (Dec. 6). Columbus North won that game 37-21 in CN's Memorial Gym.
The Bull Dogs return to action on Tuesday (Dec. 11) when they visit Seymour. The JV game begins at 6 p.m. and the varsity game will follow about 7:30 p.m.
